The Unsleeping City, episode 1: Start Spreading the News
On SantaCon morning in a snowy December New York, six strangers each met the weird side of the city. In Greenpoint Pete the Plug was warned by his back-room doctor that SantaCon was today, saw his father Mitch carried off by bubbles, fled talking trash cans, and fell into a dream-side New York, where a deep, demonic voice said "Start spreading the news" 00:26:58 and a melted-faced SantaCon attendee bit his head. Sofia Bicicleta blinded one of three towering figures outside a Manhattan bar with her stilettos and collapsed in a garbage bag, while Ricky Matsui rescued a girl and her bear from a fire, learned from Esther at the Clinton Hill Chantry that SantaCon meant Santa's defective clones, and found Pete unconscious among three mutant Santas. Ricky carried Pete to St. Owen's Hospital, where Kingston Brown treated his peppermint disease; under Central Park the druid Kugrash found the sleeping Sofia, the two discovered Santa's wrecked sleigh in the park with fae leaves from Nod, and the Broadway star Misty Moore read a fae rune on its door and found a hidden infernal one. The two groups met on the library steps, Alejandro Ortiz of the Gramercy Occult Society told them of the Unsleeping City, and a bus carried them to an ice-covered Times Square swarming with mutant Santas, where initiative was rolled. 00:00:44–02:08:38
The Unsleeping City, episode 2: Mutant Santa Melee
The party fought its way through Times Square against mutant Santa clones pouring from an icy chrysalis. Kingston read the shell as a cocoon with something growing inside, and Kugrash's Flaming Sphere in the doorway stopped more clones from coming out. Sofia flung the whole chrysalis into the sky, revealing a colossal mutant Santa and, prone beside it, the real Santa Claus, whom Kingston woke with Healing Word. Ricky decapitated the giant with a Divine Smite, Sofia caught Santa, and together they finished off the small mutants. Santa told them about the defective clones and how he had been knocked out, then shrank and whisked them to Central Park, where the centaur officer Epona Cirillo took the glyph into evidence. Santa found his naughty-and-nice list gone from the sleigh's glove box, explained that Heaven and Hell both used it, and flew off, and Epona gave Sofia a ticket for an open container. 00:01:40–01:27:23
The Unsleeping City, episode 3: Pigeon Plus Ones
In snowy Central Park that afternoon Kingston took Pete for dumplings and told him about the Unsleeping City and Nod. At the Gramercy Occult Society the party found the injured twins Ana and Amelia smelling of mint, and on the bus to St. Owen's Alejandro named Pete a Vox Phantasmas and Kingston the Vox Populi, while Pete admitted he had released a voice by pressing a button. At the hospital the twins were healed, and Alejandro, after vaping Pete's Juul, said he was in Pete's debt. That night Sofia and Kugrash met Em, the Angel of the Waters, at Bethesda Fountain, who told them of the wedding of Don Confetti's daughter to Ronald Pigeon, and Misty found an invitation to it. The next evening the party crashed the wedding in a hidden glen in the Ramble, where Sofia ran into her brother Mario. They found the angel statue gone from Bethesda Fountain, followed a trail into the sewers, and in a cistern under the reservoir met a Rat King who meant to marry his new bride, as the door shut and initiative was called. 00:01:14–01:49:08
The Unsleeping City, episode 4: Scramble in the Sewers
In the cistern the Rat King locked the door, flooded the room and called up fungus-covered albino alligators. Misty was bitten, restrained and dropped to 5 hit points, Ricky was bitten and restrained, and Kingston's commands made the alligators let go. Pete's Scorching Ray made something solid jut out of the king, and he later grabbed the angel statue, which pulled him underwater, until Kugrash, as a shark, swam down to him and the water receded. Em woke and carried Pete out, and Sofia combed the Rat King's tied tails until they untangled, the rats scattered and the crown dropped. Kugrash took the crown and sent the alligators down the drain, the Rat King was defeated, and Em, freed, cleaned the party with a water blast and said she owed them one. 00:01:14–01:28:15
The Unsleeping City, episode 5: A New York Wedding
Climbing out of the sewers, the party found Bethesda Fountain cracked in half with a streak of soot, and Em, in tears, decided to leave for Washington Square Park. Back at the wedding of Angela Confetti and Ronald Pigeon, Pete read the thoughts of a crying young woman, Melissa, at a table of pale guests and met an old man called Rob, or Robert, who seemed to know what had happened to Pete's father. At Kingston's apartment Kugrash told the others he had once been a man named Bruce Kugrich, and at the Clinton Hill Chantry Alejandro and Esther spoke of Nod, the sixth borough, and Lazarus. The party split for the night: Kingston met the golem Willy, Sofia met Isabella Infierno, and Misty met Titania in a mirror, who tried to rip the shoes off her feet. In the Dreaming Pete sold mushrooms to people who turned into insects and poured into New York, and the party rushed to the Steinway Street subway stop. 00:01:01–01:46:11
The Unsleeping City, episode 6: The War of Bugs and Rats
Coming up out of the Steinway Street entrance in Astoria, the party found the neighborhood overrun by giant bugs from Pete's dream, led by a wasp-centaur woman named Becky and a giant beetle in a hard hat. The fight ran through a bodega, a laundromat, a pizzeria and a pub kitchen. In the bodega Sofia ripped open a cocoon and freed a magical cat, La Gran Gata, and Misty pocketed a golden hand mirror to pay for later. Becky turned Ricky into a dog until Misty's Dispel Magic changed him back, and twice drained 22 hit points from Sofia. Sofia chased Becky into the pub kitchen and killed her, and the bugs dissolved and vanished. Afterwards Sofia pledged herself to La Gran Gata, the party found the Key to the City gone, and Ricky's Locate Object showed it crossing into Manhattan. 00:01:07–01:52:27
The Unsleeping City, episode 7: We Need to Talk About Pete
The party found itself in an Irish pub down the block, and La Gran Gata told Sofia she would come to her when it was time to fight. Alejandro arrived and berated Pete because people had died, and Ricky chased the stolen key on his summoned dalmatian Ox to the Financial District, where his Locate Object spell went blank. Kugrash found the name Robert Moses among the files at his son David's house in Forest Hills, Kingston was questioned by his ex-wife Liz Herrera, Sofia trained with Jackson of the Order of the Concrete Fist, and Pete got tattoos and was invited by Priya to her gallery opening. Days later Pete learned Robert would be at a Hell's Kitchen party; Robert Moses walked him to a vampire nightclub, told him "You got fucked, kid" 01:49:54, and ripped the baby Nod out of a mirror with a rope of blood. Pete grabbed the child, and his wild magic incinerated about twenty vampires and teleported him to the Lorimer Street stop. The party converged there, Kingston cast Cure Wounds on the dying Nod, and Epona arrived showing an onyx badge as initiative was called. 00:01:05–02:00:31
The Unsleeping City, episode 8: Subway Skirmish
At the Lorimer Street stop Epona turned on the party, backed by spectral crooked cops summoned from her onyx badge. She flailed Kingston for 30 damage and restrained him, and Ox, Ricky's steed, was badly hurt. Ricky's critical Divine Smite split her shadow, and Kugrash's rats killed Epona and ate the badge, but the freed cops swarmed out wanting to devour Nod. Sofia's ring grew cat paws, Pizza Rat appeared and talked, and Kingston fell to 0 hit points, helped through his death save by Pete's Tides of Chaos. Pizza Rat's die rolled a natural 20 and brought the Nod-bound L train; Kugrash carried Pete and Nod aboard, a wild magic surge brought a unicorn who sped the train, and the rats held the line as the party escaped. The train rode up into the starry sky to Nod, where the baby woke and talked. 00:00:47–01:51:54
The Unsleeping City, episode 9: Borough of Dreams
In Nod the party met Wally, the train's driver, and Kugrash told him he was his father; Wally, tearful, accepted him. At Poseidon's Diner Nod apologized, explained the Vox Phantasma and said that Robert Moses had sold his soul twice. Misty read "The New Colossus", and Nod told of the Golden Door and the paragon doorways and offered to fix Pete's magic at the Metropolitan Museum of Memories. The party then split to visit the doorway sites: Sofia learned from Dale at the Pearly Gates that he was dead, Misty met Bobby Goodfellow, who was Puck, and was warned about Titania, and Pete embraced his wild magic and later apologized to Kingston. On 20 December Sofia's brother Mario told her about the laundered money, Isabella and Dale's death, and at Priya's art show in a Brooklyn loft Isabella Infierno appeared on the roof amid fire. 00:00:48–02:00:53
The Unsleeping City, episode 10: Panic at the Art Show
At Priya's art show Sofia Stunning-Struck Isabella, who vanished in sulfur, but art devils appeared in the burning loft; one killed a bystander and one burned Ricky from 72 to 30 hit points. Misty's Fear sent Priya fleeing up the stairs, Pete lifted the unconscious Priya to safety, Kugrash's giant spiders wove a web trampoline off the roof, and a devil incinerated Ox, who disbanded into light. Isabella announced that she had stolen Santa's list and would marry Robert Moses, and Pete's Banishment on her failed. Misty freed Willy, Kugrash toppled the water tower and flooded the building, and Willy punched the door out. Sofia finally destroyed Isabella with an uppercut through the ceiling, the party escaped, and Kingston and Pete made peace on the bus home. 00:00:51–02:19:00
The Unsleeping City, episode 11: Home for the Holidays
On 21 December, the solstice, each hero lived out a quiet day. Kingston cooked breakfast for Pete, and his parents Victoria and Winston fed Pete and invited him for Christmas. Sofia spied on her family and sent an Unseen Servant to burn down her own house with her wedding pictures inside; Ricky, who had found Ox returned as light, kept the house from collapsing, and Jackson gave Sofia a room at the monastery and took her to Dale's grave, while Pete visited his supplier 53V3N. The next day the party called the Grand Central clock gnomes, who shrank them and flew them in a balloon through the Tempest, and High Priestess Hib-Hob reported her fainting and the missing Big Book of Bits and Bobbins. At Misty's holiday party Robert Moses told her on the roof that he could broker a deal with the fae court, and on opening night Titania and Seelie warriors stepped through the mirror onto the stage. 00:00:49–02:02:45
The Unsleeping City, episode 12: Broadway Brawl
On the stage of A Midsummer Night's Dream, Titania and her Seelie dancer-warriors took the theatre while Don Confetti and his pixies watched from a box seat. Misty's ritual of renewal made her Performance checks serve as her death saves, and she told Pete by Mind Link "Let's kill Titania!" 00:10:52. Don Confetti had his pixies seize Stephen Sondheim and fire on Misty, and Ricky stripped and ran on stage as Esther, Em and Wally joined the fight. Sofia leapt at Titania and dragged her to the ground, Don Confetti garroted Sofia until Esther held him with Hold Person, and Ricky threw the crown to Misty. With a natural 20 on her last ritual check the crown was on her head, and she killed Titania with Irresistible Dance and Vicious Mockery. Esther chained the unconscious Don Confetti, and in her dressing room Misty felt that by wearing the crown she could found a court of her own in New York, accepted it, and began to change. 00:01:07–02:04:44
The Unsleeping City, episode 13: Faeries and Feces
Backstage the party found Misty in her raw faerie form, everyone was sucked into Nod, and she explained that she was reborn every seventy or eighty years. At a fae conclave in FAO Schwarz Misty took the name Rowan, and after Nod defended her the clock gnomes' third option won the vote, so she kept Titania's shoes while she led the court in New York. Under Zone of Truth Don Confetti explained Robert Moses, Isabella Infierno and the tithe to Hell, and said the Big Book and the list had gone to Moses; Sofia learned that Isabella had killed her husband. Kugrash told David that he was his father, but David rejected him, Esther told of her family's curse, and Kingston won a bronze eagle from Buddy at a card night at Willy's in Brooklyn. On 31 December Robert Moses threatened the party, Liz Herrera lay cursed in intensive care, and the party entered the New York Stock Exchange as initiative was called. 00:01:22–02:15:25
The Unsleeping City, episode 14: Showdown at the Stock Exchange
At the Stock Exchange Robert Moses worked a ritual on the trading floor while vampires piloted animated kiosks against the party. Kugrash summoned rats and a fire elemental, Moses cast Globe of Invulnerability and discarded Santa's list, and Rowan animated two kiosks and an umbrella. Moses killed Pete with Power Word Kill, and Pete floated into Nod, where he met copies of his father, before Kingston revived him. Moses completed Sinatra's Law, the Golden Door in Nod opened and Nod buckled, and Moses ripped Ox's head off before Ricky beheaded him. Alejandro arrived and Sofia killed the vampire who had attacked Liz. On the dais the party found the Big Book of Bits and Bobbins, whose notes revealed that Moses was a lich who had turned his phylactery into a time stone, and a Titania contract; they guessed something would happen at midnight with the ball drop, and the questing blade told Ricky a boon waited at Yankee Stadium. 00:00:56–02:34:14
The Unsleeping City, episode 15: Hall of Heroes
On New Year's Eve the party read Santa's list: Pete and Kugrash were on the naughty half, Sofia, Ricky and Kingston on the nice half, and Rowan was not on it. Then they split up. Rowan rallied the faeries at Grand Central, and at the Gramercy Occult Society the others found dead monks, Orlando weeping over the cracked Rovias, and Ana and Amelia missing. Kugrash found David bitten, Pete opened Moses's warded office and found the phylactery box empty, Ricky received a blessing in the Hall of Heroes at Yankee Stadium, and Sofia climbed the Empire State Building and was chosen. Kugrash admitted to Esther that he had betrayed her mother; Esther drove off, her curse took hold, and Kugrash cast Remove Curse on her at Tompkins Square Park. At midnight in Times Square the phylactery shattered, the time stone broke, the Golden Door opened, and the American Dream began to emerge. 00:01:08–01:57:51
The Unsleeping City, episode 16: Times Squaremageddon
In Times Square the ball dropped and the party was seized in a hurricane of spell energy as the American Dream crossed the Golden Door's threshold as a tall, blond, square-jawed man and declared "This place is filthy." 00:08:57 The fight took place on spinning chunks of building, and the party called allies through a portal Alejandro held open: Esther, Willy, Em, Stephen Sondheim, Santa, Don Confetti and La Gran Gata. The Dream struck Pete for 46, then killed Sofia, whose soul saw Dale at the Pearly Gates until Kingston revived her. Pete learned that they were inside the phylactery and could not learn the rune sequence from within, and the Dream hit Kingston for 41 and destroyed Alejandro. Esther was flung from the platform and caught by Kingston, Nod explained that the phylactery could not be found from outside, and everyone looked at Kugrash. 00:01:11–02:15:58
The Unsleeping City, episode 17: Times Squaremageddon Pt. 2
Kugrash and his rats were burned and he went down, Santa gave Pete flight, and the Dream hurled Sondheim into a tornado and struck Santa with eye beams, and both disappeared. The Dream then made each hero a private offer; Ricky, Sofia, Kugrash, Rowan and Kingston turned it down, and Pete's natural 20 on Arcana revealed its true form and that Robert had pulled it through the Golden Door. Ricky's three hits and the questing blade's sacrifice destroyed its body and killed him, Kugrash ate the Bagel of All Things, Pete's Cone of Cold froze the remaining fire, and Sofia pushed it back through the Golden Door. Kingston revived Ricky, and Kugrash spoke the whole inscription and denied it, ending the storm at the New Year. Afterwards Sofia told Don Confetti "Once a year, I'm gonna show up and kick your ass." 01:26:29 The party made Wally Santa, and the epilogue told each hero's life six months later. 00:01:00–02:00:59
The Unsleeping City Chapter 2, episode 1: The Fall of New York City
In the summer of 1994 the nurse Kingston Brown took a call from his cousin Janice about a job at Cornell Medical, then wandered into a dark City Hall station and met the Dragon of Bleecker Street, a frail, dying dragon who hung a subway-token necklace on him and told him of the Unsleeping City. The story then jumped to the present, three years after the first adventure, on the eve of Halloween. Ricky Matsui woke beside Esther Sinclair and his dalmatian Ox before a day at the Helping Hands center, and Pete Conlan worked the register at the Uncommon Knowledge bookstore, then viewed an attic room in an Astoria house, met his new housemates Nasir Noor, Josh Mendoza and the mall goth Cody "Night Angel" Walsh, and took the room; Kingston, waking in Harlem from his dream of 1994, met Pete for lunch. Sofia Lee quarrelled with her mother Marie Bicicleta above Spaghetti's Bakery, then drove to the Upper West Side shop of the tarot reader Madam Anastasia, who was really Iga Lisowski. That night Cody slipped into the shuttered Queens Center Mall, read Latin from an infernal book in the old Hot Topic, summoned a devil and sold his soul to it; the devil signed the contract Bazathrax. Back in her apartment Iga pinned shut a warping family chest, and carved skyscrapers appeared on it showing Sofia and a man she did not recognize. 00:01:22–02:37:50
The Unsleeping City Chapter 2, episode 2: Heaven and Hell On Earth | The Unsleeping City Season 2 | Ep. 2
On Halloween eve Ricky packed hygiene kits at Helping Hands while Sofia, restless, climbed rooftops and broke the wrist of a man who grabbed a woman outside a Brooklyn bar. Esther sent Ricky to find her, and over dinner Esther proposed pooling the resources of the Gramercy Occult Society and Sofia's order, then talked to Ricky about his lost Questing Blade and asked him to join Sofia on Halloween. Sofia drove home to the empty lot where her house had stood and spent the night in the woods with Dale, her late husband, who had come with wings and angel blood and was gone when she woke. In Astoria on Halloween Cody tried to summon Lucifer and stabbed his own leg, then called Bazathrax by his real name, and Pete restrained the devil with a phantasmagoria of button-eyed dolls. Bazathrax warned of a confluence of the antipopuli in the subways; outside St. Owen's Pete turned him into a tattoo on Cody's chest, and the party gathered, with Iga and her shrunken chest, at the West Fourth platform. Kingston felt a sharp pain in his chest and hid it; a bad train roared in, the party leapt onto its back car, and the car morphed into a graveyard of zombie commuters as initiative was called. 00:02:57–01:40:18
The Unsleeping City Chapter 2, episode 3: The Mystery of the Haunted Subway
The party fought down a Halloween train made of antipopuli and raw Umbral Arcana, car by car, as costumed passengers turned into zombies, skeletons, ghosts, a werewolf, vampires, a witch and Dr. Frankenstein's monster. Ricky announced that he no longer hit people since losing the Questing Blade, and a ghost's moan aged Cody twenty years, to forty-seven. Pete's Fireball burned skeletons, Kingston's Turn Undead and Lightning Bolt cleared the crowds, Sofia ran the roofs, and Ricky killed the witch with Rebuke the Violent. In the last car Ricky pinned Dr. Frankenstein and pulled the emergency override, the dream collapsed, and the train slowed in the waking world. On the platform Pete and Sofia both saw the Umbral Arcana ebbing like a tide and agreed to meet for coffee. Kingston questioned the Upper East Side woman who had been the witch, and the episode ended as haze seeped into the box in Iga's purse. 00:02:14–02:07:22
The Unsleeping City Chapter 2, episode 4: We Need To Talk About Cody
On Halloween night the battered party recovered in a secret chamber at St. Owen's Hospital, where Kingston distilled La Gran Gata's Holy Grail Detergent into medicine to help Cody, who de-aged slowly over an hour and a half. Pete searched the Metropolitan Museum of Memories and found that two earlier Vox Phantasma, Hans Fischer and Josefina Gatsby, left no final memories, and learned that the Voxes whose memories ended had vanished. Esther arrived through a door with the vampire twins Ana and Amelia, and Cody, talking aloud to Bazathrax in his chest, said yes aloud when the devil offered to send invites to renegade devils. Iga opened the chest to a fairytale castle in an alpine forest, where Sofia found an empty portrait frame for Iga and water-damaged paintings, Cody was given a plain sword from an umbrella stand, and Ricky, at the edge of the forest, heard a voicemail-like message from "Esther" that was not Esther's voice. Sofia found silver nunchucks and a note from Dale and met his spirit at his grave, then the monastery's former First Fist Tony Simos warned that a Vox Phantasma had always brought huge incursions from the dream realm. In the downtime that followed Sofia met the new wizard JJ, and Bazathrax admitted that he had forgotten to limit his invitation, so that the Jersey Devil and his friends were bound for the Holland Tunnel under storm clouds over New Jersey. 00:02:21–02:44:30
The Unsleeping City Chapter 2, episode 5: Trouble at the Tunnel
In mid-November alarms rang at the New York Public Library, where Sofia was with Esther and JJ, and a map showed red dots streaming from New Jersey toward the Holland Tunnel. Esther found the Umbral Engine overloaded and the tunnel wards down, and Sofia knew at once that Cody was behind it. At the tunnel mouth it was revealed that the silver nunchucks Dale had given Sofia were the Questing Blade; she handed them to Ricky, and the blade boomed "Whosoever be most worthy of the Questing Blade shall wield the power of a true champion" 00:20:21 before it shot into Cody's hands, leaving Ricky with the umbrella sword. On the Jersey side Sofia and Pete saw a raw-Umbra vein miles wide running toward the Pine Barrens, and JJ found the protective runes erased. While the party readied JJ for the work, a horde of siege devils, swarm devils and the Jersey Devil arrived; Cody's Bestow Curse failed and the Jersey Devil's Finger of Death dropped him to zero, though Kingston healed him. Kingston drove a Tesla to rescue Ricky, Pete's Cone of Cold wiped out the swarm devils, and the episode ended with JJ's third roll failing and one round left to finish the runes. 00:03:03–02:20:31
The Unsleeping City Chapter 2, episode 6: Collaborators
The battle ended when Ricky ran the Jersey Devil through, Cody decapitated him, and flame from the dead devil poured into Cody's chest tattoo. Cody, now the new Dark Lord of New Jersey, sent the horde home, promising one day to take back the Queens Center Mall: "But that is not today." 00:28:57 Sofia told Ricky she was still angry that he had not got the Questing Blade; JJ finished the runes after all, a soaked Esther arrived, and Ricky admitted to her that the Blade had passed to Cody. In a dream visit to Nod, Pete banished a color-drained silhouette and found the withered gray orphan, Nod, atop the Empire State Building, whom he held as they healed. On the ferry to the council Esther called at Staten Island's Monastery of the Midnight Sun, Pete told the others of Nod and JJ admitted sending his research to Gladiator for an internship; at the monastery Sofia quietly cursed Tony Simos, and Lowell Masters returned Iga's chest after a scan showed it was fighting an effort to erase the city. In two weeks of downtime Sofia tailed Tony, Kingston's mother Victoria handed him an Excelsior Dynamic Homes card, and Tony caught Sofia in a Bronx alley and vanished after stopping a recording on his phone. 00:00:09–02:46:13
The Unsleeping City Chapter 2, episode 7: Parade of Peril
On the morning of the Macy's Day Parade Pete dreamed his way to the sleeping Gray Orphan, who named their little sibling Nuria, and learned that something may have followed Nod back from the deeper Dreaming. At the parade Cody threw a Big Gulp at a Gladiator float, Wally Claus waved from the last float, and Kingston recognized the clowns as those of the Central Park carousel. Pete judged them true clowns that exist only in the Dreaming, and one shot Wally with a balloon while the clowns cut the lines of the giant floats and carried him skyward. The party fought among the balloons: Pete incinerated clowns with Fireballs, Ricky hoisted Kingston up, and Iga pulled herself and the unconscious Wally into her chest, where Ricky healed him through the box. Kingston fell, and Sofia swung from a cord like Spider-Man and crashed with him through the glass of a skyscraper, into the headquarters of Excelsior Dynamic Homes. 00:02:54–02:15:07
The Unsleeping City Chapter 2, episode 8: Feasts & Families
In the dark Excelsior offices Sofia and Kingston copied a hard drive showing that Excelsior was owned by Gladiator Industries and that the Queens Center Mall, the Cloisters and the Central Park carousel had been bought. Wally took the party to dinner at his brother David Kugrich's home in Forest Hills, where David, a vampire hunter, studied the drive until a PDF opened onto Nod and a hand vaster than the city reached for Kingston. Kingston answered by declaring war on Gladiator, and his voice echoed across the city. At Thanksgiving, Sofia realized she was two weeks late and bought a pregnancy test in secret, and JJ confessed to Ricky that he had given Tony information. The next morning Cindy relieved Sofia as First Fist and asked her to renounce her pact with La Gran Gata; Sofia chose her magic and left, and Nadia gave her the scroll Forms of the Greater Dreaming. At Esther and Ricky's home the party agreed to hand the Order a dummy scroll and go to Nod. 00:02:31–02:24:56
The Unsleeping City Chapter 2, episode 9: Fight at the Museum
Cody called his sword, the old Questing Blade, the Thirsting Blade, and Ricky heard it complain about Dale and about being given away. Pete showed the hard drive to his friend 53V3N, who hated Gladiator, and the party took the L train into Nod, where the Metropolitan Museum stood under snow and a new moon. There they found the chained and bleeding Unicorn of New York City being stabbed by four animated suits of armor. Kingston summoned Alejandro Ortiz from Paradise, Iga's Eldritch Blast opened a channel of pure legend, and the party broke the armor with era-appropriate weapons, though Kingston's natural 1 on concentration sent Alejandro back. During the fight Sofia found the unicorn tapestries and a sword in a stone; afterwards the freed Unicorn spoke of the three great spirits, and Cody pulled the sword out and it fused with the Thirsting Blade into a double blade, Dark Excalibur. 00:05:08–02:17:36
The Unsleeping City Chapter 2, episode 10: Nulla Dies Umquam Memori Vos Eximet Aevo
The Unicorn told the party about the three totems of New York and Kugrash and about a silver thread to Ricky's heart, and Sofia's Insight found two more cords tying Ricky to a juicy cockroach and a spicy pigeon. JJ's map of Nod showed raw Umbra clustering at the Gramercy Occult Society, the Bryant Park library, the Queens Center Mall, the carousel and the Cloisters. Sofia took the pregnancy test over a Sour Patch Kids box and a urinal congratulated her, while Kingston and JJ rode a sky train to JFK, where the pearly gates hung above the clouds, to see Alejandro, and the others searched the Hall of Memories, where Pete found a third Vox Phantasma, Heather Simos, erased by an anglerfish-like entity. At Nod's bedside Kingston revived them, and Nod explained about monarchs and their siblings. After Cody drew tarot cards and lost all his belongings into Iga's chest, Pete walked with Nod downtown and watched a Latin motto erased letter by letter until only "Null" remained; the stone erupted into void and a tentacle of invisibility ripped Nod into the deeper dreaming. With nothing to fight, the party ran, and Stephen Sondheim cut a hole to the waking world for them to leap through. 00:02:29–02:21:24
The Unsleeping City Chapter 2, episode 11: Let's Get Tiny
Pete touched a New York minute in the wormhole and learned that Null wanted to return to the time when it was everything; the party landed on a busy downtown street, where Sofia traded with a construction worker for jeans for the naked Cody. Ricky, Iga and Kingston found Perry Pidgeon on a Brooklyn rooftop, and when Ricky called on him to claim his power, Perry became the spicy pigeon. Sofia told Dr. Lugash she was pregnant, and he found the embryo partly celestial and invincible; that night Pete dreamed of Null, defied it and woke. At Grand Central, Bilbry shrank the party to an inch, a clock gnome workshop opened onto the dragon trains, and in the chest's castle Iga freed the dragon Smoczamatka, took her troublesome egg, and Kingston held it. The others reached the Monastery of the Sacred Rat, where Marty was revealed as the juicy cockroach and the monks cried out as ant legions marched in. 00:04:10–02:23:12
The Unsleeping City Chapter 2, episode 12: The Battle of the Hot Dog Cart
The party and the cockroach monks fought the ants of the Queen of Throgs Neck, whose centurions, legionnaires, acid-spraying ketchupults and a mustard-wagon ram pressed the monastery. Misiek died to a ketchupult, and Cody wiped out under his moped with the three-bladed sword. Kingston's Lightning Bolt burned the wagon, Iga's Shatter dropped the bridge, Pete's Fireball and Cone of Cold cleared the ranks, and Sofia climbed a Heineken bottle to kick down the ladder the ants had used. Kingston's natural 20 Intimidation and a Rat Jesus speech from atop the wagon made the ants retreat and surrender. At a feast of trash and old hot dogs Ricky lifted the Thirsting Blade, and Cody apologized to him for being a fake sword guy. Marty offered to help reach Kugrash, and four who had known him in life carried the group into a placid void where the Kugrash constellation spoke. 00:03:41–02:08:35
The Unsleeping City Chapter 2, episode 13: Of Rats & Dragons
Kugrash told the party that the Dragon of Bleecker Street had died partly because Null erased seven items from his hoard, that Gladiator was a real company Null exploited, and that the best way to defeat Null was to hatch a new dragon and rebuild the hoard. Back at the monastery Sofia told the party she was pregnant with Dale's baby, and the group split into a week-by-week downtime. Pete's contact 53V3N had finished with the hard drive and said an unknown person had settled Pete's debt. Ricky and Cody gave Nick Lisowski the Peasant Sword and had the triple sword split into three weapons at a Queens forge; in Chinatown the Shen family told how they had brought a dragon egg to New York in the 1870s, and Rabbi Mike Salters revived the erased Willy with an Alef. Iga made her son Nick a first-level Hexblade warlock among the ancestors in her chest, and at the end of the week Pete found an apology from Maddie Park, the investigator who had once found him for his family, and said she had settled his debt; she answered that she was in against Gladiator. 00:03:43–02:33:18
The Unsleeping City Chapter 2, episode 14: History Checks and Lost Dex
Sofia met a carpenter with the initials J.C. on his hammer, who talked about Dale's death. At home Kingston found that three adoption agencies had refused him and Liz Herrera, showed her the egg, and she agreed to raise a dragon; that night Nod gave Pete a golden dream for Kingston, and Pete left it with the sleeping couple. Cody and Iga found a prototype time-flattening machine in Gladiator's mall. Maddie Park found JJ's hidden internship application on the drive, and reported that Gladiator had bought Ellis Island and already held seven artifacts. At the closed island the Gotham Timepieces beeped and Null appeared, dealing psychic damage and making the party's companions vanish. Ricky, Kingston, Cody, Pete and Iga leapt into old photographs, retrieving the wedding bouquet, Peter Stuyvesant's wooden leg and other objects, while Null followed Iga into a photograph, cut her hit point maximum to 19 and dropped her to zero, though her Charisma save kept her from death. The episode ended with Cody's Warding Bond on Iga, before her next turn. 00:03:39–02:45:33
The Unsleeping City Chapter 2, episode 15: For the Hoard
Iga, on nine hit points, blasted Null three times and left it shredded but not gone, yet Null followed her out and dropped her; Pete's Disintegrate failed to finish it, Null cast Banishment on her, and she ended up in a timeless place with Josefina Gatsby, Hans Fischer and Heather Simos. Null left, the photographs remained, and the party chose to go on with the ritual; the photographs came to life, and a Bicicleta ancestor said goodbye to Sofia before the party reached Fairyland, where Rowan Berry and Stephen Sondheim met them. Back in the waking world the chest went to Iga's family, and Kingston's fourteen Divine Intervention rolls failed in the two weeks of downtime. Sofia told Dale about the baby at JFK with Pete and read the book The Axioms and Laws of Paradise. Then Ricky's apartment was found wrecked, and Tony texted, "And a sweet hello from me and your friend, Esther." 01:41:54 The party raced to the Gramercy Occult Society, where Tony and the Concrete Fist were waiting, and initiative was called. 00:01:38–01:46:57
The Unsleeping City Chapter 2, episode 16: Treachery At Gramercy
Tony Simos, with traitor wizards from Gramercy and Concrete Fist monks, had juiced the Umbral Engine and kidnapped Esther, and he greeted the party in the engine chamber with the words Last Dance. Pete's Cone of Cold and Cody's moped charge opened the fight, but Tony stunned Cody and crushed Pete's windpipe while monks beat Cody to two hit points; Rowan Berry fought beside the party and the wizards dispelled the engine again and again. Cody's death save succeeded and he met Lucifer. Tony dropped Ricky to zero and threw Sofia into the engine, and Pete's wild magic surge tethered him to her; in a bubble Lucifer forged Cody a new contract and a new greatsword. In the void between times Sofia was approached by Null, used the Gotham Timepiece in her letters about Dale, pulled Dale out of the past and freed his soul, and both burst out of the engine. 00:03:56–02:32:55
The Unsleeping City Chapter 2, episode 17: Two Sides of the Same Coin (Part 1)
With Dale at her side, Sofia battered Tony with a critical Flurry of Blows. When Pete banished a wizard, Esther appeared, wept at the traitors, held the Staff of Sorrow and talked to Ricky about the pregnancy test, and Tony killed Ox; on her next turn Sofia dealt Tony ninety-seven points of damage and kicked him into the engine. The party cleared the monks and wizards, and Esther dragged the engine down to 150 percent. Kingston revealed where the hoard was, Alejandro marked Gladiator machines on a map and said goodbye, and La Gran Gata brought chopped cheeses. In the hidden Central Park North station the party split into a baby squad and a daddy squad, the daddy squad passed the golden boombox automat, and both squads reached the burlesque room and a vault where the Tammany Tiger was caged. Beyond it lay the hoard, and in the burlesque room, as Gladiator drones and corporate spirits closed in, Null appeared. 00:02:03–02:30:22
The Unsleeping City Chapter 2, episode 18: Two Sides of the Same Coin (Part 2)
Cody and Ricky rode the moped through Sofia's darkness against wraiths and delivery drones, while Null dispelled the dark with its legendary actions. The first attempt at the ritual to birth the dragon failed, so the party kept fighting until Kingston's twenty-second Divine Intervention roll worked: the buried payphone rang, New York answered, and Null was left at a disadvantage. In the second round the Unicorn, Perry and Marty succeeded, the dragon of Harlem was born, Null vomited out Iga and then Nod, and Iga's Eldritch Blast sent Null into the deep dreaming. Kugrash appeared as starlight, and Kingston named the baby Langston Brown. Sofia took Kugrash's mantle as First Fist of the Order of Rat Jesus, Ricky and Esther got engaged over a ring in an apple, and Dale spat out a ring of his own. Cody's epilogue found Gladiator retreating, Lucifer removing the Jersey Devil from his soul and Cody working as a carny at the Hell's Mouth roller coaster in a restored Fairyland, and two to three years later the friends gathered for a Central Park barbecue. 00:02:46–02:13:03
