Brennan says Sofia sees a throbbing vein of raw Umbra, miles across, stretching south from New York City, connecting it to what is probably the Pine Barrens, where the Jersey Devil dwells UC2 E5·00:29:43. He describes it as forming a kind of land bridge between New York and the dead zones of no magic to the south UC2 E5·00:29:43.
The Pine Barrens is the New Jersey home of the Jersey Devil, linked to New York City by a vein of raw Umbra that explains how the devils reached Manhattan UC2 E5·00:29:43. The Jersey Devil does then arrive with his devils at the toll booth in UC2_05 UC2 E5·00:48:20.
In UC2_10 Sofia asks about the Pine Barrens on the map of Nod, and Brennan says it does not appear on the map UC2 E10·00:19:16UC2 E10·00:19:20. JJ says there was very little dream realm there, and Brennan shows an infernal layer over it that has been collapsed to something two-dimensional or less UC2 E10·00:19:38UC2 E10·00:19:49.
