Unfinished Business
What happens
- 00:00:18 Final episode opens in the rain and thunder outside Loam Hall; the party has scattered and Fletcher Cottonbottom is "somewhere in Loam Hall". Buckster, Daisy and the Vicar arrive at the front door. — 00:00:38
- 00:02:45 Buckster pounds on the door as a diversion; Ambrose Harding opens it. Buckster wins an opposed Athletics (19 against Harding's 6) and shoves him past, so that the turtle spins off down the hall. — 00:03:41
- 00:05:32 Vicar Ian passes a Stealth check (18 against 14) and slams against the wall by the open door, hidden, with his eye on Mrs. Molesly. Rekha's Daisy gives Buckster advantage (Help). — 00:05:13
- 00:05:32 Buckster's Deception against the two constables' Insight: Brennan rolls 16 and 19 (they get +2); Sam's roll is a natural 20. The constables are taken in "hook, line and sinker" and every ally in Loam Hall (docks included) gets advantage on stealth checks for the rest of the episode. — 00:09:24
- 00:09:12 The constables herd the guests into the drawing room; five constables exist, two are in the room, one of them the bandaged man Lars laid out in the kitchen; some guests (Mrs. Molesly among them) were dragged off to be interrogated elsewhere. — 00:09:58
- 00:10:43 Buckster announces to the drawing room that Detective Cross is innocent and the real killer is in the manor, and demands that the police seize "that red herring"; the constables club the red herring, a guest who keeps saying he is an innocent fish. — 00:11:33
- 00:13:07 Buckster looks around the room: Hawkins, Edwina Thimble and Carolyn Dickory are in a corner; Harding enters with Mr. Gilfoyle; Armond Armadillo is present. — 00:13:21
- 00:14:11 Daisy slips out (Stealth with advantage, 22) and goes to the tower; the Vicar (Investigation 16) knows from the window of Gangie's cottage that the constables dragged Mrs. Molesly upstairs and heads for the bedrooms. — 00:15:23
- 00:17:57 Daisy picks the tower door lock (Sleight of Hand 21) and relocks it behind her; in the tower's first landing room she finds Simon Shellcrest, Lawrence Longfoot and Eoighan McCrae beaten and unconscious; Brennan rolls death saving throws and all are alive. — 00:20:46
- 00:22:10 Daisy's first aid wakes Lawrence Longfoot, who says the constables beat him asking where Sylvester Cross was; Daisy tells him "The police are bad, Sylvester's good", has him write that as a headline and climbs on; on the stair she sees mouse fur on a stone edge. — 00:22:10
- 00:25:08 Cut to Sylvester outside in the rain a few minutes earlier: he decides climbing the knotted rope is his only option (walking in the front door and the elevator are both too hot). Athletics with advantage (8 and 11, takes 11) gets him to the top, at the cost of four points of subdual damage (Brennan: he is at 11 of 15). — 00:28:26
- 00:29:43 Daisy picks the lock of the tower-top attic door (Sleight of Hand 26) at the very moment Sylvester pulls himself up to the open windowsill; in the attic, chained before a dusty bolted-down standing mirror, is the emaciated Connor McCabbage, alive; Brennan speaks of Catherine hearing her husband's voice "all these long months". — 00:30:17, 00:34:12
- 00:32:05 Connor says to Daisy "You were the woman I spoke to in the mirror"; Sylvester (Medicine 2 plus 6 = 8) and Daisy (Medicine 15) see malnutrition and dehydration; Sylvester realises that Connor being alive is why the murder could not be solved. Connor has been "crying out for Catherine"; Brennan says Catherine has been hearing her husband's voice on the wind for months. — 00:34:12
- 00:34:12 Cut to Lars running through the rain to a dockside boathouse, with advantage on Stealth from Buckster's booming voice; Stealth 13 beats the guard's passive Perception 10. — 00:35:17
- 00:35:27 Initiative (Lars alone): natural 20. One crooked constable guards the boathouse door; Lars hits with an attack with advantage (20) and action surges (26), knocking him out silently, nobody hears. — 00:38:17
- 00:39:07 Lars's Athletics 12 against the locked boathouse door fails; a voice inside (Lucretia) asks if he is trying to come in; Lars claims to be a ghost and she opens the door (Brennan: automatic success, no Deception roll). Inside: Lucretia unmanacled, and Constance Brockhollow and Dr. Corbin Magpie bound and gagged but alive. — 00:40:39
- 00:41:35 Lars drifts around the room as a ghost (Acrobatics 18), ungags the two. Lucretia tells Constance the body in the study "was a decoy" and her father will arrive soon; she explains the family was in debt and William said they would "disappear for a time" and wait in the boathouse while he cleared matters up with "associates" whom she never learned. — 00:42:38
- 00:46:47 Constance (to Lars): her father had been writing her for months to make amends, asking her to come for his 60th birthday with Corbin; after dinner he took her upstairs (in the billiards room) and said she and Corbin must disappear that night; his debts had been "fronted" by someone and moved from legitimate institutions "to somewhere else"; he told her it was all a con and that Sylvester had been tricked "this summer". She refused, told him to go to Sylvester Cross, and he said he would write Sylvester a letter in his study. Brennan: Connor's murder was a proof of concept for the fake bodies. — 00:52:05
- 00:52:18 Lars tells them the squire is dead and that the body found in the house is his actual body, not the decoy; Lucretia says "I don't believe you" for the first time in her life, and Constance thanks him. — 00:53:01
- 00:53:23 Asked by Lars whether anyone acted differently (Cottonbottom might be dressed as a snail, an armadillo or a turtle), Constance has no answer and wants to go straight to the house; Lucretia says Jez "knew that we were disappearing tonight" and that his gambling debt was as bad as William's. Lars unties everyone and he, Constance, Corbin and Lucretia charge up the hill. — 00:55:20
- 00:55:50 Gangie returns by the spiral staircase from her cottage to the ritual room, takes the elevator (the key) to the kitchen wing; Perception 25 (Brennan's number to beat: 6, then "an eight") hears a voice at the top; the lone crooked-constable sentry is there. Initiative 21; Stealth with advantage 26 against 14; she hides on top of the elevator car, a shovel propped against the up-button; attack with advantage 23 hits, 14 damage (1d8+3 plus 2d6); second hit 19 vs the sentry; Gangie then kills him by pushing her thumbs through his eyes. — 01:05:07
- 01:05:28 Stealth with advantage (23) takes Gangie to Mrs. Molesly's bedroom, where she finds the Vicar already outside the door listening to a constable interrogate Mrs. Molesly ("It was probably you that told the Badger to turn coat"). Gangie, in the vent above, reveals herself to the Vicar by putting a hand over his mouth. — 01:06:10
- 01:08:55 They enter together with Gangie hidden under the Vicar's robes: Gangie's Stealth (11 with advantage) and Vicar's Deception (8) both fail; the Vicar kicks the door, it does not open, then he opens it and shouts "Unhand her, you heathens"; the constable says there is no God or ghosts. Initiative: Gangie natural 20 (plus 3), a 6 (label Rekha) is read as the Vicar's. Gangie's Acrobatics 20 (DC 20) gets her out. — 01:11:14
- 01:12:38 Combat: Gangie misses (10) and the constable clubs her for 10; Mrs. Molesly screams "Not my son!"; the Vicar gives Bardic Inspiration to Gangie, hits (12 = the constable's AC) for 10 and calls him a "BASTARD"; Gangie's shovel (17, sneak attack, 10) kills the constable. Gangie pockets his eyeballs in her cheek. — 01:15:46
- 01:16:38 Mrs. Molesly thanks "Mr. Green"; Brennan notes that at a second flash of lightning her pupils do not dilate. Gangie's Insight is 11. She explains Dr. Magpie told her tonight of a condition triggered only by a bright flash of artificial light, not lightning; Detect Thoughts by the Vicar confirms she tells the truth. Players link this to the fine ground glass under the door (a camera bulb) from the study. — 01:25:24
- 01:17:23 Meanwhile Buckster, holding court in the entrance hall with a glass of whiskey, pulls out the squire's finances, says he was in debt from "crystals, powders", and drops the glass near Armond Armadillo to test his reflexes (Brennan rolls a 3): Armond slips and falls, so he is "irrelevant to our story". — 01:20:38
- 01:26:23 Top of the tower: Sylvester asks Daisy why she ran; Daisy says she was always the right hand and has "nobody of my own", that they are "two magnets facing each other", and she did not tell him because she did not want him to come after her; Sylvester says he could not see beyond his ego. Investigation: Daisy 21, Sylvester 18. — 01:29:38
- 01:31:40 Daisy sees at the window that Lawrence Longfoot's camera is broken; Sylvester follows her eye; he says "That would be the nail in the coffin, at long last, of Fletcher Cottonbottom." Rain melts makeup on Lawrence Longfoot's hand and he drops the act: "My dear Mr. Cross, at long last we meet again". — 01:33:21
- 01:33:29 Fletcher forces an opposed Athletics (Sylvester needs 18 with advantage, Daisy helping; rolls 2 and 11) and shoves Sylvester out of the window. Sylvester's unarmed strike with advantage (8 and 7) fails to manacle Fletcher; initiative Daisy 13, Sylvester 7. — 01:36:57
- 01:43:45 Daisy cushions his fall by defecating out of the window (Constitution 13); Fletcher loses his turn in shock. Brennan lets Sylvester re-roll one earlier roll; Grant takes a bonus-action Investigation (18) and then an Acrobatics check (2, fails). He falls 30 feet (Brennan rolls 9 damage) and survives with 2 hit points. — 01:51:02
- 01:51:50 Daisy hits Fletcher with her dagger (24 to hit, 7 damage), "even my shit is gold". Perception: Daisy 9, Sylvester 21; Fletcher vanishes in a stroke of lightning and is seen crawling on the outside of the tower. — 01:53:09
- 01:54:14 Lars, Constance and Lucretia burst into the drawing room; the guests scream "Ghosts!"; Buckster says there is no such thing as ghosts and that Lucretia is alive. Final combat initiative: Gangie 22, Vicar 18, Lars 17, Sylvester 12, Daisy natural 1 (4), Buckster 0. — 01:56:03
- 01:56:43 Gangie (Perception 28) spots Fletcher climbing the tower roof; her rope lasso misses (10); she dashes after him (Acrobatics 12). The Vicar casts Bless on everyone and gives Daisy Bardic Inspiration, declaring he does not need to know whether God is real, "My moral compass is inside me." — 01:59:33
- 02:00:27 Lars in the drawing room shouts for all of Squire Badger's associates (Hawkins, Harding, Gilfoyle) to be pinned down and dashes upstairs to the squire's bedroom, where he remembers Daisy said the switches are; Constance is left to fight the two constables. — 02:01:22
- 02:01:57 Sylvester, lying on the ground with a re-broken hip, uses a bonus-action Investigation (17 plus 9 = 26) to look for a conduit of electricity from the mushrooms to a ground wire that he could interrupt to make the roof dangerous; Brennan sends him a text, and he uses his Cunning Action dash to go inside the house. — 02:03:21
- 02:03:28 Fletcher laughs at Gangie ("amongst your number all evening, back from the dead"), says Squire Badger "got cold feet and tried to ruin everything", climbs on and fires a gun, first at Sylvester (who has ducked indoors) and then at Gangie, who is at 15 hit points: "Gangie, a terribly unfortunate time for a change of heart. I knew you couldn't be trusted. That's why I had to recommend your services in secret." Gangie is hit in the chest and drops to 0; her Dexterity save is a natural 20 plus five (25) and she slides off the roof into the storm. — 02:06:00
- 02:06:29 Daisy climbs onto the roof (Acrobatics with advantage: 8 and a dirty 20); Investigation 12 shows no chance for her to kill Fletcher. Cut to the bathroom: the badly injured Sylvester takes a tiny pointed file from the hat Daisy gave him and jams it into the electrical system to interrupt the grounding; he takes three points of damage from the lightning. — 02:09:00
- 02:09:15 Fletcher: "Mr. Longfoot, I think you'll find that I've been here all along, moving amongst you." The lightning rod (connected to the mushroom cellar) extends up into the storm cloud behind him. Daisy wins an opposed Athletics (Brennan's Box of Doom 2, Daisy 3 and 10 with advantage) and pushes Fletcher into the lightning rod, "ass blasting" him; Fletcher's skeleton lights up and he dies. Brennan: "Daisy D'umpstaire, you have killed Fletcher Cottonbottom." — 02:11:45
- 02:12:46 Out of combat. In the drawing room Buckster (Insight 13, confused about outside events) exposes the Brockhollows' finances and has the mice produce his knife; the two constables run into the hall, where Constance Brockhollow kills both. Harding tries to slip out and Lady Eugenia Bristlebrush shoots him in the head ("There's been a murder."). Hawkins, not Harding, carries the contract. — 02:15:45
- 02:16:26 Lars finds Sylvester dying in the bathroom; death saves: 12 (success), 7, 2 (failures); Lars's Medicine DC 15: 4, natural 1, 7. Buckster races in, gives Sylvester advantage (Help); Sylvester rolls a natural 20 death save and revives, to the shock of the table. Buckster says "Don't you die on me Detective" and slams his fist into Sylvester's chest, a jolt of electricity. — 02:24:42
- 02:25:28 Gangie wakes in Mrs. Molesly's bed (she fell through the roof), with tea; they go down to the drawing room. Connor and Catherine McCabbage are weeping in each other's arms; Catherine: "Vicar, I tell ya right now, I do believe in miracles!" Daisy and Sylvester meet eyes; Daisy has tears because "he gave me a story". — 02:27:38
- 02:28:01 Constance and Jeremy explain: the murders were to be faked to destroy Sylvester's reputation, the family would "disappear", Sylvester would "rot in the Tower of London", and the father's friend, now known to be Fletcher Cottonbottom, would bring them back from the grave "along with Connor McCabbage". Jeremy shows Harding's book, whose last name is Connor McCabbage, the name Harding was going to give Gangie to dig up. — 02:29:25
- 02:29:53 Buckster offers to finance the family; Jeremy and Constance agree ("Yes, we're deeply, deeply, deeply in debt"). Buckster asks Gangie and Mrs. Molesly to work for him; Gangie: "I think I would, dad." Gangie steals the contract from Hawkins's pocket (Sleight of Hand 24, Mrs. Molesly helping); Hawkins starts to say the father sold control, loses it, says he has "never committed a war crime" and runs. — 02:32:49
- 02:33:51 Brennan: Hawkins put his Medal of Valor in the study drawer after the shrapnel was found, as deniability because he is a war criminal; Edwina and Carolyn tell Buckster that a gentleman in the library, Mr. Longfoot, said he would return the knife they had picked up. — 02:36:17
- 02:35:36 Gangie asks why Longfoot was in the tower: Shellcrest says the constables looked to Mr. Longfoot, who said "knock them out here, for plausible deniability"; Brennan ties Longfoot's head injuries to Lars hitting the masked figure in the elevator fight. — 02:35:53
- 02:36:36 Lars drinks with Lord McCrae; Armond tells Buckster "I was a fucking wheel"; Gilfoyle reveals he is Inspector Neville Montserrat of Scotland Yard, trades insults with Sylvester and leaves. — 02:39:13
- 02:40:19 Daisy tells Sylvester that she left him at the altar because Fletcher Cottonbottom had information about her and threatened to turn it over; she proposes with the engagement ring she kept on a necklace. Sylvester accepts, produces two gold bands, the Vicar marries them ("Fox and Raccoon"). Brennan ends with a Bacchanal and lightning. — 02:44:30
