A Scandal in Britannia
What happens
- 00:00:33 Recap of episode 1: the tithe from the squire, Sylvester's returned fee, the meeting of Buckster and Gangie over the list of robbed graves, and the look between Daisy and Sylvester across the ballroom.
- 00:00:33 Flashback, 12 years earlier: a train through the Alps; Sylvester, aged 43, is following a jackal in a pork pie hat who tucks a stolen diadem into his coat.
- 00:03:45 Sylvester follows him unseen behind a newspaper (stealth 24) into the dining car; the jackal waits for a London fence, but Daisy sits down at his table instead and he gives his name as Roscoe McCoy.
- 00:05:40 Daisy's persuasion with advantage (17) charms McCoy; her "woman's intuition" lie fails (10) and he leaves; she lifts the diadem as he passes (sleight of hand 13 after disadvantage); Sylvester sees her do it (perception 22).
- 00:08:12 Sylvester takes the diadem off Daisy (sleight of hand 25 against her perception 19); Daisy searches the train, sniffs it out in a private compartment and picks the lock.
- 00:11:13 In the dark compartment Sylvester lights a match and asks whether the diadem belongs to her; Daisy claims to be Virginia Chase, heiress to the Chase fortune; her deception fails (10 against Sylvester's 21) but she is so flustered that Brennan rules Virginia Chase is a real client who hired Sylvester a week and a half earlier, so Sylvester apologises.
- 00:14:10 A second contest, Sylvester's deception against Daisy's insight, ties at 18; a door down the hall is kicked in and a shot is fired in Daisy's room as the jackal's gang hunts her.
- 00:15:11 Sylvester hides Daisy in his clothes chest; at the door Sylvester's deception to the criminals is a natural 1 and the suitcase says "Hah!"; Brennan skips ahead 00:17:07: a fight on the train roof, Daisy shoots the last criminal in the shoulder before a tunnel.
- 00:17:07 Days into weeks: Daisy presents herself as an American private investigator; the case runs to Vienna and Berlin and shows that the diadem theft was a front for a blackmail operation by Fletcher Cottonbottom.
- 00:19:00 Romance and a proposal within the year; the day before the wedding Sylvester finds documents in Daisy's hotel room at the Savoy showing income from a mysterious American businessman and that she passed his investigations' information to the shadowy and powerful; the players choose to play out the confrontation 00:21:11.
- 00:21:46 Daisy, who had broken into Sylvester's home and rushed back, finds Sylvester in her room; Sylvester forgives her, Daisy says she will not change; Sylvester reads panic under her cynicism (insight 16) and cannot give her up.
- 00:26:17 A chapel at the riverside: Sylvester waits at the altar and no one comes; he walks back to Hampstead Street alone and finds Daisy's deerstalker hat and a note "-D".
- 00:28:17 Back in 1905 at Loam Hall: Sylvester downs his cocktail; table talk about the flashback.
- 00:29:19 Katie asks where the squire's donation went (to Our Lady of Prayerful Paws); Brennan turns the party over to the players.
- 00:30:37 Lucretia tells Lars there will be a post-dinner seance; Gilfoyle introduces Daisy to Lucretia; Daisy plays along with her astrology and spiritualism, and Lucretia announces "To the seance room!". Lucretia calls Daisy "Mr. Boyd's personal assistant in all matters corporate" and Daisy answers "We're more partners, but yes"; sensing a "fiery" aura, Lucretia draws "You're trying to say I'm an Aries?" from Daisy and asks "Do we have another cosmolgripher here?" — 00:31:23–00:31:58.
- 00:33:11 Sylvester has gone to the bar and meets Ollie Banks the otter bartender, who tells him "Looking long in the face there, sir. And longer than a fox for usual, everything all right?" — 00:34:32; the squire squeezes his arm and warns him; Sylvester's intimidation (20) makes the squire back off with a look "like he knows something's coming for you."
- 00:38:39 Perception round (DC 15): Buckster 17 and Ian 18 overhear the squire and Sylvester; Gangie 14 does not, being in the kitchens.
- 00:39:50 Buckster reads the Daisy-Sylvester history (insight 25 against Daisy's deception 14) and joins Sylvester at the bar; Buckster opens with "Well I see you've met my Irish friend" — 00:41:36; their talk about oil and "bodies" is a coded alliance against the squire (Sylvester nat 20 insight 28, Buckster deception 26).
- 00:47:37 In the kitchens Gangie eats with the staff; Gilfoyle tells him to keep to the servants' quarters; Mr. Harding tells him to bring work gloves to the second-floor landing at half past seven.
- 00:52:11 Lawrence Longfoot meets Sylvester and Buckster and sets up a newspaper photograph (Sylvester: "as they say, all press is good press" — 00:54:02); elsewhere the squire walks with Ladies Calliope and Tabitha Fawnbrook and Colonel Hawkins.
- 00:56:03 Ian thanks-and-confronts the squire about the donation (persuasion 11); the squire answers that the Cardinal thinks Ian's gifts are wasted at Tufting Meadows and mentions Siberia.
- 01:01:58 Gilfoyle takes Buckster to the squire in the leisure wing; Buckster calls him "Squire Badger" to his face (insight natural 1) and learns the etiquette slip from Colonel Hawkins.
- 01:07:04 Alone with the squire, Buckster threatens to sink his game with the eight ball (intimidate 10); the squire flips the poker table, shoves Buckster prone and flees ashamed; Daisy, Sylvester and Gangie hear it through the air vents.
- 01:17:32 Buckster spots mouse feet behind a curtain (perception 25), bluffs (deception 17) and bribes the maids Edwina and Carolyn with American coins (persuasion 23).
- 01:21:28 Lucretia shows Lars and Daisy her seance room; she "channels" a vague reading for Daisy; Daisy's pitch to charge for seances fails (persuasion 14); Lucretia leaves.
- 01:30:32 Daisy notices the seance room was retrofitted and that the painting of a medieval badger has been restored and its frame is bolted to the wall (investigation 24); Lars does not see.
- 01:33:11 Lars confronts Daisy in the hall ("What kind of mess are you here to make?") and tells Sylvester at length about it.
- 01:37:24 Gangie overhears Gilfoyle and Harding quarrelling about a man hired at the estate (insight 16, then dirty 20); anxious, Gangie steals cutlery with Mrs. Molesly's help and gives her a dandelion.
- 01:45:48 Dinner: the Box of Doom roll puts Sylvester across from Daisy; Constance toasts her father; Ian prays and Buckster talks to Daisy while a text with the list of robbed graves is passed to Rekha.
- 01:56:37 Sylvester and Daisy trade barbs across the table; Wisdom saves (6 and 12) leave both shaken.
- 01:59:13 After dinner Constance goes with the squire to a study; Harding hands Buckster a letter, and Daisy and Buckster go to read it; Gangie waits in the shadows; Ian is taken to the seance room by Lucretia; Sylvester and Lars step outside.
- 02:04:24 Lightning; Sylvester sees a figure by the dock; Buckster (insight 27) reads that the squire is selling his stake in BB Industries to Hazel Hogswallop with a proxy for Josiah Jackrabbit and that someone is pushing him.
- 02:09:54 Gangie hears Constance quarrel with her father through a vent; Mrs. Molesly interrupts the squire as he storms off with her and Harding.
- 02:11:34 Sylvester sees Fletcher Cottonbottom on the dock in a flash of lightning; lightning strikes the tower; a scream.
- 02:12:30 Initiative is rolled; Ian gathers the guests, Daisy recognises the scream (Mrs. Molesly), Gangie slips through unseen, Buckster hides, Lars and Sylvester run for the study.
- 02:19:45 The whole manor piles into the room: Mrs. Molesly, hands bloody, kneels over the dead squire, who holds a knife; she says he dug into his own chest; all eyes turn to Sylvester, who says to Lucretia "I've seen a ghost."
- 02:23:28 End of episode; preview of Episode 3, "A Time for Clues".
