Trouble in Tuffeton
What happens
- 00:01:07 Recap (recap): the heroes bested an army of spiders serving a monstrous vision that was a scrambling of a monstrous arachnid and Little Miss Muffet; after a healing from Mother Goose, Ylfa rising again and a knife from Puss in Boots, the spider was defeated, the nursery rhyme completed, and the spider put into the book and sent beyond it to adventurers in another realm (00:01:07, 00:01:59). Players joke about "the scat" (00:01:47–00:01:55).
- 00:02:48 Standing on the web in the mine, the party has Miss Muffet with them; she chose not to enter the door into Mother Goose's book and is the first person met in the Neverafter to choose to stay with them (00:02:48). She says that as the big spider she put everyone in the town into cocoons at night (00:03:34).
- 00:04:25 Looting the dark below the web (Investigation: Gerard Dirty 20): rotten brooches and curios, bodies wrapped in the web that are not people to rescue, and the finds — a velvety black cloak with stars embroidered inside, a grass-like hooded garment, a golden bridle, and a mirror-bright sword with "veritas" on the blade held in a skeleton's hand (00:04:40, 00:04:52, 00:05:59, 00:06:17, 00:06:51, 00:08:04).
- 00:08:39 Gerard tries a form with the sword (Wisdom save 13), feels it work flawlessly, reads "veritas", looks in the blade and sees a frog; Brennan asks whether deep in his heart he feels he is a man or a frog (00:08:46, 00:09:06, 00:09:49, 00:10:34).
- 00:10:56 Gerard climbs back and shows the finds; Rosamund heals herself with Cure Wounds; the party decides to go to town; Pib's ring points to the entrance (00:11:17, 00:12:03, 00:12:21, 00:12:38).
- 00:12:44 At the cavern's mouth small ordinary spiders and fairy-tale spiders (with bindles and hats) are returning; one says everyone got conscripted into an army and turned into a "big boy"; the party meets Itsy Bitsy, who leads them out (00:12:44, 00:13:40, 00:14:17, 00:14:52).
- 00:15:06 Outside the rain still falls; Muffet looks at the seat at the top of the hill and says she should get it; Rosamund invites her to lunch; Muffet asks whether they would let her "even with my head being so weird"; as she smiles the rain stops and sun comes out for the first time since the times of shadow began (00:15:21, 00:15:50, 00:15:56, 00:16:13).
- 00:17:30 Mother Goose offers Itsy Bitsy a place in the book; Itsy Bitsy tells his story, asks whether it will only be sunshine and decides to travel with Mother Goose instead; Mother Goose records the tale but the spell it grants is not yet available (00:17:42, 00:19:49, 00:21:35, 00:22:22, 00:22:43).
- 00:18:06 Division of labor: Muffet goes to have her picnic on the hill; Pib says he will talk to her about tuffets while the others cut people down, and the rest go out to search the town; investigation/survival rolls (00:18:15, 00:18:27, 00:18:39).
- 00:24:43 The villagers are stowed asleep between ceilings and roofs; the first cocoon is cut open in the council hall's attic and a monocled man wakes screaming; every freed villager screams, and the party insists the sleepover story (00:24:43, 00:26:34, 00:28:51).
- 00:29:12 On the hill Muffet fears they will know it was her; Mother Goose talks with her about how it felt and tries to build her confidence (10); the first freed villagers demand that the spider be found and destroyed (00:29:16, 00:29:52, 00:32:25, 00:32:52).
- 00:33:03 Pinocchio spots the monocled man as the likely authority (Insight 13) and casts Suggestion; the man, Mayor Harold Hopps, gives a rousing speech; Pib pickpockets "biological glue" from him; the mayor calls for a celebration (00:33:47, 00:34:49, 00:35:00, 00:37:45, 00:38:15).
- 00:38:56 Night falls and stars appear; perception checks; the village celebrates in the tavern the Golden Chair with ale and curds and whey (00:38:56, 00:40:28).
- 00:40:32 Gerard takes Ylfa aside: she is not a monster; they discuss Muffet, being a frog and a prince, and why they love their families (00:40:52, 00:41:36, 00:43:17, 00:46:20).
- 00:46:53 Scheherazade writes in Mother Goose's book: her group escaped the cave, gained new allies and found a doorway; she asks about the Land of Beasts and Birds; she expects both parties to leave their worlds for the next one; Mother Goose passes the news to Gerard by Message; the party dances in the tavern (00:47:20, 00:48:27, 00:48:44, 00:50:54, 00:49:25).
- 00:51:27 Muffet's spoon speaks: it calls its past with the dish "a giant mistake", declines to enter the book and says a spoon will always have plenty of work in Tuffeton (00:51:30, 00:51:50, 00:53:33, 00:53:59).
- 00:54:12 Mayor Hopps thanks Pinocchio, who tells of Toy Island and, to Muffet's questions, of his story; Mother Goose writes a new, carefree Pinocchio story and the rain returns while the ink is swallowed by the page; Pinocchio declines a different story (00:54:15, 00:54:37, 00:57:35, 00:57:44, 00:58:37).
- 00:59:43 Rosamund puts her spindle to the book (Sleight of Hand 16); the book writes Sleeping Beauty's story and breaks off at her falling asleep on her 18th birthday (01:00:06, 01:00:27, 01:01:47).
- 01:02:30 Gerard shows the found things; Pib says they are his stuff (01:02:34).
- 01:03:36 Pib, at the bar, sees two townsfolk go upstairs; follows (Stealth 22, Perception 23) and overhears them and a third voice, "Mistress", who notes the rain has returned, learns the book-writer was writing the story of a little wooden boy, "Pinocchio", and that the ink moved on the page as if the book grew sick, and orders them to kill him and take the book; a wet tearing noise precedes it (01:03:45, 01:04:24, 01:04:59, 01:05:13, 01:07:21).
- 01:07:53 Pib runs back down, dances on the bar and warns Mother Goose; the party quietly arranges an ambush outside while the two men follow Mother Goose out the back (01:08:23, 01:09:12, 01:10:36, 01:11:49).
- 01:13:19 Initiative: Pib throws first and misses; with Gerard's Commander's Strike his second attack is a natural 20 for 30 and kills one outright; the creature under the skin is made of twigs and dissolves in the rain; Mother Goose jumps into a tree; Pinocchio pulls the other's hood off; Rosamund hits (25, 12) and knocks it prone; Ylfa drags it by the cloak; Pib kills it with a dagger (15) (01:14:42, 01:15:29, 01:15:52, 01:17:30, 01:18:14, 01:19:14, 01:20:44, 01:21:56).
- 01:23:02 The party finds the room the creatures used: ruined mattress, a silver platter with a floating blood-red candle that is a spell; Gerard's sword reveals the candle's light; Rosamund smells the woman with the spinning wheel; Gerard blows into the candle and the room's sconces light (01:23:16, 01:24:45, 01:25:41, 01:26:12).
- 01:26:49 Pinocchio casts Faerie Fire; a string connects him to the candle; a voice asks "Whom do you wish to speak?"; Mother Goose shoves Rosamund into a closet; Pinocchio asks to speak to his mom (01:26:53, 01:28:22, 01:30:05, 01:30:16).
- 01:30:28 The Stepmother arrives in silhouette at the door as the face of the wicked fairy appears in the flame; Pinocchio turns toward his Stepmother; Gerard throws the Sword of Truth; its reflected light shows the Stepmother's face; the wicked fairy screams and tears out her own eyes; the candle goes out (01:30:56, 01:31:17, 01:35:28, 01:35:46).
- 01:37:09 Ylfa and Pinocchio look; Ylfa fails the Charisma save and sees her grandmother eaten; Pinocchio saves (21) and sees the Stepmother's form (01:37:45, 01:40:00, 01:40:18, 01:42:52, 01:43:00).
- 01:44:49 Pinocchio grabs the thrown sword (Acrobatics, nat 20 with help), cuts the strings the Stepmother casts on him and falls through burning pages; Scheherazade hauls him through a door into a room with a sailor and his crew; "What the fuck was that?" (01:45:38, 01:46:50, 01:47:15, 01:48:43, 01:49:28).
- 01:49:30 Brennan closes the show; a next-time preview follows (see Table talk) (01:49:30).
