The Curdled Web
What happens
- 00:01:04 Recap (recap): the party went into the mines beneath the village of Tuffeton to face an arachnid entity of unspecified characteristics; through Mother Goose's book the fabled Scheherazade reached out, and a tapestry holding an image of Princess Elody had been spied in other stories; "gateways and portals abound", arcane princesses move between realms, fairies conspire, and wolves, stepmothers and perhaps geese are involved (00:01:04). Ally, Siobhan and Brennan joke about two geese, one good and one evil (00:02:41, 00:02:48).
- 00:02:56 Brennan sets the scene: traversing a web deep in the darkness; the party has the drop on crawling arachnids; he explains the surprised condition and goes into initiative with a surprise round (00:02:56, 00:03:26).
- 00:04:11 Rosamund and the web: only darkvision sees; the characters step on strands guided by the spider-shaped crow; Ylfa says the spiders are about 40 feet ahead; Rosamund casts Faerie Fire (DC 14) over two spiders; the web glows (00:04:18, 00:05:04, 00:05:17, 00:05:56).
- 00:06:47 Pib climbs onto Ylfa, readies an attack and helps Timothy; Ylfa runs up and misses a spider with a bite (8), the spiders mistake her for one of their own; Pib's readied dagger is a natural 20 sneak attack for 17, the first use of Brennan's death blow and injury mechanics; the spider survives and is exhausted (00:07:21, 00:08:23, 00:08:51, 00:09:28, 00:10:55).
- 00:11:12 Mother Goose casts Expeditious Retreat, crosses the web with Pib's guidance and Acrobatics 16; his book opens to "Jack Be Nimble" and his son Jack leaps out in golden light and lends him spryness; he dashes and gives Gerard help (00:11:32, 00:11:42, 00:12:19, 00:13:07).
- 00:14:13 Gerard uses a sword form from his book, misses (10), spends Action Surge, hits (19) for 16 with Distracting Strike; both lit spiders are staggered and exhausted; the surprised spiders lose their turn and talk (00:14:23, 00:15:04, 00:15:55, 00:16:17, 00:16:43).
- 00:17:06 Pinocchio turns the crow back from a spider, casts Faerie Fire on it (the crow fails the save, a 7), and sends it into the air; the light catches something huge descending on a silken strand: a spider whose front is the torso of a young girl with a bowl and spoon — Little Miss Muffet (00:17:29, 00:19:24, 00:20:43, 00:21:17, 00:21:34).
- 00:21:58 Mother Goose senses a creature "scrambled between stories"; Muffet calls the newly hatched spiders "little babies" and orders them to destroy "something that does not breathe"; Pinocchio fakes breathing; Muffet casts Bane on Gerard, Pib and Ylfa and kicks the web: Rosamund, Pinocchio and Mother Goose go prone, Mother Goose also restrained (00:22:48, 00:23:46, 00:24:08, 00:24:28, 00:25:41).
- 00:27:37 The infant spiders swarm, mostly for Pinocchio (Deception natural 1) and Ylfa; Ylfa tries to pass as their mother; Rosamund stands, hits Muffet (26) with Gathered Swarm for 14; Pib's ring points at Muffet; Ylfa kills a spider by eating it, Shifts for AC 17 and 5 temporary hit points (00:27:55, 00:28:17, 00:30:06, 00:30:52, 00:31:35, 00:32:49).
- 00:33:36 Mother Goose, stuck in the web, casts Shatter (18, nine each), kills a spider, writes "curds and whey" into the book and tears a fissure in Muffet; Gerard leaps on a spider (Athletics natural 20, attack 14, damage 22) and calls Pinocchio forward with a maneuver (00:34:09, 00:34:40, 00:35:35, 00:37:55, 00:38:16, 00:40:13).
- 00:41:00 Giant spiders' turn: a web throw slides off Gerard's skin; Silvery Barbs spoils a hit on Ylfa; Senator the ram bursts from the book and negates the larger spiders' turn; Pinocchio casts Fey Presence (two spiders charmed), the crow kills an infant spider (18) and is left as bait (00:41:07, 00:41:51, 00:42:08, 00:42:54, 00:44:15, 00:44:56).
- 00:45:47 Muffet attacks Ylfa three times and misses, speaking with her; a lair kick on the web drops Pinocchio (Dexterity 4); infant spiders bite him through the wood and he loses concentration on Faerie Fire; seven attacks on Ylfa knock her out of spider form (00:46:47, 00:47:10, 00:47:44, 00:49:41, 00:52:25).
- 00:53:35 Rosamund tries and fails (9) to free Pinocchio, then says "You're on your own" and runs into the dark; Pib fails to climb Muffet; Ylfa speaks to Muffet, hits her with the woodsman's ax (25, 15 damage), turns spider again and covers Pib; Mother Goose Vicious Mockery fails and Healing Word heals Ylfa 8; Pib's thrown knife (Dirty 20, 21) buckles a leg (00:53:58, 00:54:45, 00:55:25, 00:56:45, 00:57:12, 00:58:40, 00:59:34, 01:00:20).
- 01:01:02 The spider under Gerard misses after Silvery Barbs and Senator; a spider bites Rosamund (11); the crow pecks Pinocchio free and he crosses through the charmed spiders, takes 9, recasts Faerie Fire and screams "no, no!"; the crow drops to 2 hit points (01:01:13, 01:01:49, 01:02:40, 01:03:37, 01:05:34, 01:09:46).
- 01:06:29 Round: Muffet slashes Ylfa (12), they talk about being monsters and being ugly, she kicks again; Rosamund goes down at 16 damage and rolls a death save; Pib is bitten to 4 hit points (01:06:57, 01:07:16, 01:08:05, 01:10:59, 01:11:15, 01:11:55).
- 01:12:28 Pib inspects the spoon (Investigation 17): magical, possibly related to the Dish; his attack makes curds and whey pour from Muffet's torso; Ylfa misses and uses her last spell slot to heal 6; Mother Goose casts Shatter again (16), writing words; Gerard directs Pib, who hits with a Dirty 20 for 17 and a torrent of curds and whey falls into the blackness (01:13:17, 01:13:29, 01:13:57, 01:15:00, 01:15:39, 01:18:13).
- 01:18:40 Gerard leaps between Pinocchio and the spiders, sparing Rosamund; Pinocchio's Eldritch Blast (21, 6 damage) is first seen as strings wrapping Muffet; Ylfa gets bitten by Muffet's human face and mandibles; the crow vanishes (three hit points of damage) and Ylfa goes down at 8 damage (01:18:50, 01:21:24, 01:22:13, 01:23:59, 01:25:50).
- 01:26:04 Death saves for Rosamund and Ylfa pass; Mother Goose fails Strength (5), casts Healing Word on Ylfa (8); Pib's readied attack is a natural 20 (25 damage); the death-blow save (13) succeeds but Brennan says her hit points had been 15; as Mother Goose writes, a crack in the story opens (01:26:04, 01:26:31, 01:27:01, 01:27:24, 01:28:13, 01:28:28).
- 01:29:20 Pib's dagger shears the story; light fills the cavern; Muffet appears as a girl with a spider face, the spider carapace falls away, dying, and she throws curds and whey on Rosamund for one hit point (01:29:28, 01:30:06).
- 01:30:35 Muffet wakes, is scared of spiders, tells of a spider coming down on her hill; Mother Goose seals the spider part into the book by writing "Along came a spider"; Scheherazade writes back in her script; Muffet asks to touch the book and the party hesitates (01:30:35, 01:31:09, 01:32:31, 01:33:09).
- 01:34:08 Ylfa says let her touch; Muffet touches the book, an illustration of her running from a spider appears and a golden door opens; she asks "Am I always supposed to be scared?" and chooses to stay, telling of villagers of Tuffeton in cocoons; she offers silk (01:34:31, 01:35:29, 01:36:43, 01:37:23).
- 01:37:30 Brennan closes the show; a next-time preview follows (see Table talk) (01:37:30).
