Terror on Toy Island
What happens
- 00:00:53 Brennan's welcome; the cast jokes about Emily touching Murph's back and a marriage "recommitment" (table talk); Brennan's recap (recap): the party is deep in the oceans of the Neverafter, plumbing the depths of Toy Island, the old stomping grounds of Pinocchio; Lou: "The hotdogs are still great", and they met their old pal Candlewick, who is now back in Pinocchio's book; Candlewick's talk of the Quiet Pirate, who is Princess Mira of the Merfolk Realm, the Little Mermaid, with legs for now (00:01:37, 00:01:52, 00:02:06, 00:02:37).
- 00:03:02 The cast reads the shop signs of Toy Island (Bart's Funnel Cake and Cigars; the rest are table readings [?]: Slappy's Bubblegum and Whiskey Hut, Circus, Peanut 'n' Pies) and picks where they would eat (table talk, but the signs are on the map frames) (00:03:08, 00:03:09, 00:03:11, 00:03:18).
- 00:04:19 Recap continued (recap): Mira communicated her name telepathically thanks to Mother Goose's spells, because she has no voice and is in constant pain; the party's second life after death and The Lines Between, the Canonade and the Authors; the Baron of Bricks defeated, Snow White met in the lands of Snowhold after freeing the Big Bad Wolf; Snow White's visions show victory over the fairies only if seven princesses are gathered; Cinderella is en route with Princess Rapunzel and a princess Snow White calls the Beast, and also Princess Elody of Greenleigh, "the Prince Gerard's lady wife"; the party left Snow White's spectral dwarfs to face the Tsar of Snowhold and Koschei the Deathless and came for Mira before the Mer-King, part of the Council of Kings, could, on reconnaissance and intel found in the desk of the Baron of Bricks (Brennan also jokes "No, no donkey fever yet!" at 00:04:19); the Mer-King learned of them through Rosamund's presence in the ocean via handwork he got from the Sea Witch, and he has surfaced (00:04:30, 00:04:37, 00:04:37, 00:05:40).
- 00:05:40 The Mer-King demands his daughter back; combat begins. Ylfa acts first: she reads Mira's mood, rages, and prepares a grapple reaction against anyone who attacks Mira (00:06:35, 00:06:50, 00:07:25, 00:07:55).
- 00:08:06 Pib's Perception 14: the Mer-King looks powerfully magical, his merrow look like scrappers and warriors; the party plans the angles; Pib dashes with double speed and hides in a little boat (Stealth 17) with a readied dagger throw (00:08:39, 00:08:40, 00:09:42, 00:11:13, 00:11:29).
- 00:11:35 The merrow dive and spring onto the dock; Brennan lets the Mer-King's bellow cancel the disadvantage from Ylfa's noisy rage; the Mer-King calls "Daughter, you have debased yourself with this vile new form!", Mira fails a Wisdom save and the Mer-King slings a spell at Rosamund, Pinocchio, Mother Goose and Gerard (Constitution saves); 22 piercing damage to all four (00:12:35, 00:13:12, 00:13:18, 00:13:40, 00:14:33).
- 00:14:41 The Mer-King's Insect Plague swarms crabs, eels, lampreys and hagfish over the dock; he holds it by concentration (00:14:44, 00:15:20).
- 00:15:34 Mira, compelled, runs toward her father; Ylfa's reaction grapple, 18 against Mira's 19, then Emily realises she used Acrobatics not Athletics and matches the 19; a re-roll against 15 and "I just crit" — Ylfa holds Mira (00:15:57, 00:16:09, 00:17:07, 00:17:27, 00:17:33).
- 00:17:47 Gerard attacks (12), uses Commander's Strike to call Pib; Pib's thrown-knife sneak attack from hiding hits for 17 on a merrow; at the end of Gerard's turn the water around the Mer-King's dais boils (00:18:54, 00:19:16, 00:20:29, 00:21:18).
- 00:21:38 Mother Goose casts Bless on three allies, hands out Bardic Inspiration and runs; Rosamund casts Zephyr Strike, hits the Mer-King (29, 16), 33 damage with her birds' help; the Mer-King keeps his concentration (DC 10 on both; Brennan states no totals, only that he makes both saves); the party leaves the swarm; Rosamund's Perception 25 sees the Mer-King baffled by the churning water and a strand of light running from the water to Pinocchio's chest (00:22:00, 00:23:16, 00:23:26, 00:24:34, 00:25:39, 00:26:54).
- 00:27:43 The taut strand of destiny from Pinocchio's book; the pages of the book rustle and the vermin flee; Il Terribile Pescecane, the Terrible Dogfish, bursts from the water and eats the Mer-King at once; Mira is silently screaming in terror (00:27:43, 00:28:32, 00:30:22, 00:30:42).
- 00:31:47 Pinocchio's History is a natural 20: Brennan gives him a new warlock subclass ability and a connection to the Dogfish by a strand of destiny; the Dogfish once swallowed him, it has asthma (smoke or fire makes it release what it swallowed), and its tiny eyes are its weak point (piercing damage; a called shot at disadvantage, or a piercing natural 20, takes an eye) (00:32:14, 00:32:20, 00:32:37, 00:34:25, 00:35:31).
- 00:36:05 Insight "daddy-meter" readings of the merrow: only Gerard gets a 15; the merrow in front of him is more afraid than angry; Pinocchio screams all he knows about the Dogfish; the Insect Plague ends; Pinocchio joins the "distraction" team; his second Insight is a natural 1; he fires two Eldritch Blasts (a natural 20 and an 18) into a merrow for 19 and 5 damage (00:36:11, 00:36:13, 00:37:00, 00:37:46, 00:38:07, 00:39:04, 00:39:24, 00:40:20).
- 00:41:02 Cricket is sent to Rosamund; the Dogfish splashes back under, and a wave capsizes a boat (a natural 3 save); Ylfa holds her action to jump on the Dogfish, takes a "brown bear" form and steps back; Mira is no longer compelled; Ylfa lights a matchbook flame; Pib holds an action to pierce an eye (00:41:02, 00:41:57, 00:43:34, 00:44:08, 00:46:29, 00:46:57).
- 00:48:09 One merrow runs away from the water along the dock; another charges Pib; Pib's Constitution save is 5, plus 3 from his own ability; Mother Goose casts Silvery Barbs; Brennan says the merrow's natural 20 would have killed Pib; Pib takes 6 (halved by Uncanny Dodge) and 8; the second merrow grapples Mira (her saves 10 and 7) and dives overboard with her (00:48:50, 00:49:20, 00:49:57, 00:50:27, 00:50:46, 00:51:13, 00:51:35, 00:52:11, 00:52:23).
- 00:53:19 Gerard admits "I fucked up", Dashes, uses Action Surge and jumps onto the merrow carrying Mira; Athletics 19 grapples it (the merrow keeps to the surface so Mira can breathe); a second check, 2 (nine with the bonus), keeps him holding on in heavy armor; Gerard's Commander's Strike sends Pib at the "red guy": 15 damage, dead (00:53:57, 00:54:12, 00:54:50, 00:55:21, 00:55:49, 00:56:34, 00:57:25).
- 00:57:41 The Dogfish rises again: Dexterity saves from Rosamund (14), Cricket (15 on the die) and Ylfa (23); Rosamund takes 55 damage and falls, Cricket is killed instantly, Rosamund is swallowed; Ylfa fails her save on purpose (27 damage) and dives in after her (00:57:42, 00:58:03, 00:58:26, 01:00:24, 01:01:11, 01:01:17, 01:02:31).
- 01:03:18 Mother Goose runs to Pib and gives him Bardic Inspiration; inside the belly, Rosamund makes a death save (14) but takes two failures from acid; Gerard's Athletics 19 in the waves (01:04:32, 01:05:49, 01:07:02, 01:07:22).
- 01:08:10 Pinocchio tracks the Dogfish by the tether, warns Gerard, runs and Misty Steps to a dock, hits a fleeing merrow twice (18; 12 raised to 15 with Bardic) for 15; Perception 19: the Sea Witch speeds in on a boat with a ballista ("Oh, I'm late. I'm too late."); Persuasion 16 draws the Dogfish toward the thumping feet (01:09:20, 01:11:04, 01:11:23, 01:12:34, 01:13:12, 01:14:16, 01:14:31).
- 01:15:00 Inside the Dogfish, Ylfa puts a Goodberry in Rosamund's mouth and lights the wood with a match and Control Flames; the Mer-King is dead in there; the Dogfish's save against DC 25 starts as Brennan's natural 20, Mother Goose's Silvery Barbs and Pinocchio's Call of Destiny force a re-roll with disadvantage (the final die is not stated; Ally chants "Nat one" and the save fails); the Dogfish spits out Rosamund and Ylfa; Rosamund swallows the Goodberry and has 1 hit point (01:15:00, 01:16:11, 01:17:15, 01:17:46, 01:19:02, 01:19:41, 01:20:23, 01:21:55, 01:22:17, 01:23:08).
- 01:23:40 Pinocchio sees a fireworks stand behind him; Pib hides (Stealth 22); the merrow slashes Gerard (8 and 7) and swims out to sea with Gerard and Mira; Pib's 21 hits for 14; Mira bashes the merrow's skull in with a conch shell and carries Gerard and herself back onto the deck (01:23:40, 01:25:10, 01:25:43, 01:26:19, 01:26:54, 01:27:11, 01:27:50).
- 01:28:06 Gerard guards Pib and lights a match; Mother Goose tackles Mira out of the Dogfish's path and casts Healing Word on Rosamund (6); the Dogfish emerges at the end of his turn; Rosamund grabs Ylfa to a dock and shoots the Dogfish's eye (one attack at disadvantage, dice 13 and 7, the lower used, against AC 17), then hits a merrow (28, 10 damage) (01:29:44, 01:33:23, 01:34:45, 01:35:13, 01:36:13, 01:36:58, 01:38:05).
- 01:39:33 Pinocchio finds the fireworks stand useful only if someone is in the mouth; Insight 17 shows where the Dogfish will rise and he picks himself; he straps on fireworks; the Sea Witch cries "That's a great shot! The Terrible Dogfish, you've got to get its other eye!" (01:39:46, 01:40:55, 01:43:07, 01:44:07).
- 01:44:12 The Dogfish rises: Ylfa as a lion fails to reach the eye and tries to grapple; Pib vaults 60 feet with a natural 20, stands on the ship's wheel and throws a knife into the second eye; the Terrible Dogfish vanishes from Toy Island; the Funnel Cake and Cigar shop is gone (01:44:12, 01:45:38, 01:48:56, 01:50:25, 01:50:40).
- 01:51:06 The last merrow: Gerard fights it one on one (its kick fails: Athletics 26 against 21); 11 and 14 damage kill it; Brennan: it had nine hit points left (01:51:25, 01:51:55, 01:52:23, 01:53:00, 01:53:17).
- 01:53:22 Aftermath: the party jokes about the hero of the fight; the Sea Witch says the Dogfish was "more the archer and the cat"; Brennan ends on Mira, in frozen rage at the woman who took her voice, drawing a weapon (01:53:22, 01:53:37, 01:54:18, 01:54:30).
- 01:54:45 Next-time preview (not lore of this episode) (01:54:45).
