Duel on the Southern Lawn
What happens
- 00:00:05 Aabria's greeting names the six archfey; recap: the exchange of letters, the turn about the grounds between Hob and Gwyndolin, the tense moment between Rue and Gwyn, the Great Hart Hunt where Theodore of the Court of Hoof and Claw played prey as a White Hart, private moments in the woods with "tenderness between Rue and Captain Hob" and "a steeling of nerves with Andhera and his Advisor", and "a revelation about Gwyndolin's true nature" — 00:01:03.
- 00:02:03 Reputation: the gems have moved again; "for the first time in our game, you all have differing reputation ranks"; nobody is in a negative zone yet, so no cost to being seen with anyone, but anyone with more than a two-step lead over another player may exert that influence and be mechanically rewarded; Andhera, Gwyndolin and Hob went down, "Everyone will move, every session" — 00:02:28, 00:03:44–00:03:51. Many changes come from the perception of actions: "your society has made an Olympic event out of jumping to conclusions" — 00:03:22.
- 00:04:04 New rumor phase: each person at the table, Aabria included, puts forth a new rumor or spreads one from session zero (it then becomes a scandal), and says whether their character helped spread it — 00:04:04, 00:05:07–00:05:17.
- 00:05:17 Rumors and scandals, in order: Aabria: a new rumor that Hob is "actively and overtly courting Gwyndolin" to salvage the two courts' alliance; Omar: "the Lords of the Wing can't fight for shit" becomes a scandal, since the cousins could not take down the one foe without help; Chirp, "seen as the official winner of the Hart Hunt", now has "a little asterisk by your name": a deal or foul play is suspected, since Theodore was seen leaving with her cousin in his arms; Brennan: a new rumor, from Boil and Blemish, that the Sea Foam Court feels the Court of Wonder took the credit for the Bloom; Emily: Chirp spreads that Theodore was taken with Squak and Squak let them down gently, offering tea and going to bed early; Lou: Hob's defeat of Andhera becomes a scandal, Andhera's absence from the hunt being "further evidence"; Oscar: a scandal that this is the last Bloom to ever occur, started by the Sea Foam Court (Rue did nothing to accelerate it); Surena: a new rumor that Andhera was brought to the Bloom by force by his helper, which Gwyndolin "accidentally spread" in an off-the-cuff remark to an attendant — 00:05:17–00:11:46.
- 00:11:50 Burning tokens: a treasured token can be burned to take a rumor or scandal off the board; Chirp keeps the "lack of prowess" rumor ("low expectations can be just as impairing in a duel"); Hob keeps the rumor of his promenade too (Aabria: the Goblin Court does not mind talk that implies "gentility and cunning"), and instead worsens it with a written apology that casts him as dressed down by his superiors, to show the Goblin Court is not seeking the alliance — 00:12:03–00:14:11.
- 00:14:18 Letters: Chirp and Squak each write to Grandfather. Chirp's letter proposes leveraging Hob, the captain who slandered the Lords' military capacity, as a source of information instead of marriage; Squak's reports the wager and Chirp's step toward a suitor in Andhera (the "Pillar Boy" pun). Grandfather answers Chirp with a feather ("a token of his esteem" — 00:17:08) and Squak with a super-brief letter, "I may have underestimated you" — 00:19:50, plus "A literal family jewel" — 00:20:06; Squak weeps — 00:14:23–00:20:30.
- 00:20:32 Gwyndolin sends Chirp a basket of breads, nuts and candy worms (Stealth 19; one little bird wakes and sees her, no alert). Chirp invites her to tea by penguin; Gwyndolin answers aloud while carrying the overheated penguin back two miles, and is invited in; Aabria pins the scene — 00:20:32–00:25:08.
- 00:25:16 Andhera's first letter to Gwyndolin, with half a shell, delivered by his dog; Gwyndolin's glamor flickers as she reads, and the dog sees it — 00:25:26–00:28:56.
- 00:29:13 Gwyndolin, transformed into her "more comfortable self", writes a letter signed BINX — 00:29:27.
- 00:30:13 Aabria sends Squak a bowl of sea foam in the shape of an Apollonian gasket; touching it, the bubbles pop and the voice of Baroness Alven speaks her letter of affection; Squak spills it when he hears Chirp — 00:30:15–00:32:15.
- 00:32:17 Rue writes an apology to Gwyndolin ("gates of friendship"); Wuvvy takes it publicly; Gwyndolin returns a woven key and a note "I accept"; Aabria gives Oscar a key token — 00:32:28–00:39:30.
- 00:39:35 Rue writes to Hob, then tells Wuvvy of their feelings and commands her to burn the letter (Command, DC 16); Wuvvy, not told to keep it secret, heads for the Goblin Pagoda — 00:40:17–00:46:36.
- 00:46:43 Andhera's second letter. He asks Advisor what Advisor wants to do ("Go home."), then hand-delivers it to the nest of Chirp and Squak: a collection of pickup lines, lewd jokes and rude drawings; a personality quiz game; Chirp tells him "I think your sister is entirely overrated" and names Suntar; Squak (Perception nat 20) hears a warning chirp and leads him out the back — 00:46:50–00:59:50.
- 00:59:54 As Andhera leaves, Gwyndolin arrives for tea with the penguin. Over tea she asks the cousins for advice on decorum, confides that she may have upset the Court of Wonder, answers about eligible courtiers, and, under Squak's Persuasion, talks of the court's "malice" and "pageantry"; a Charisma save (natural 20) keeps her glamor in place. Afterward Chirp sends her a Message about Hanavan — 00:59:54–01:14:11.
- 01:14:24 Hob's night and morning: Perception dirty 20; calisthenics; his ink map; an apology note given to a salt goblin; he writes to Wrackingspelt until Wuvvy, in her third, feral form, comes in and throws him a bell, accuses him of hurting "a person I care about" and demands satisfaction; Wuvvy names the Southern Lawn, Hob names blades, and each is to bring a second — 01:14:24–01:25:41.
- 01:25:46 With an hour to spare, Hob names Gorebladder, a tiny salt-shaker goblin, as his second, then visits the Trickster Court and the Sea Foam Court (token burned on Persuasion) to dig into who in the Court of Wonder ended the engagement — 01:25:53–01:36:22.
- 01:36:22 Aabria asks Squak what really happened the night after the hunt; Lou narrates a night with Theodore, who becomes "Chooch"; Theodore is required to be Wuvvy's second; Squak sends birds to every court announcing the duel — 01:36:35–01:43:27.
- 01:43:32 Andhera tells Advisor of the sea-cave library, and decides to go to the duel to prove his worth despite the noon sun; he cuts himself on his scimitar — 01:43:34–01:48:01.
- 01:48:03 Gwyndolin builds an umbrella and, as BINX, calls Mika, a dwarven mother, to grant her the ability to cast Unseen Servant; then returns to Gwyndolin — 01:48:04–01:54:35.
- 01:54:35 Rue receives Squak's bird, weeps, and comes to the duel dressed in mock snakeskin and porcupine quills; Aabria grants advantage on Intimidation for the session — 01:55:08–01:57:43.
- 01:57:53 The dueling ground: the dome turns red; Wuvvy and Theodore in feral form and platinum gilt armor; Hob tells Blemish and Boil about Gwyndolin; Hob and Rue lock eyes; Chirp offers Rue tea and is refused; Rue gives Wuvvy Bear's Endurance; a Sea Foam baroness drops a ribbon — 01:57:53–02:08:50.
- 02:08:50 Duel: Hob wins initiative and hits with trips; Wuvvy hits back twice with disadvantage; Andhera interrupts with a demand for satisfaction under a thundercloud; Wuvvy names him her replacement; Hob chooses wrestling; Rue sends Chirp a Sending and she answers; Andhera rolls a natural 20 on the opposed check and slips Hob's first grab; Hob lifts him on the second; Andhera offers a hand of friendship; Hob accepts — 02:08:50–02:28:59.
- 02:29:05 Hob presses Wuvvy to say what satisfaction she demanded; Wuvvy walks off without speaking; Hob speaks of Viscountess Gribalba and leaves — 02:29:08–02:30:25.
- 02:30:33 Aabria gives Brennan and Omar a small dagger each and closes the chapter — 02:30:33–02:30:39.
- 02:30:39 Next-time preview (see Table talk).
