Gepetto

Gepetto is only told of in Brennan's opening narration of the fourth episode NA E4·00:00:50. Brennan says a humble woodcarver who wished more than anything for a son was named Gepetto and was a maker of toys and puppets NA E4·00:00:50. He says Gepetto carved a little wooden boy from wood and named him Pinocchio, and that the boy came to life NA E4·00:00:50.

In the ninth episode the party watches a memory in which Gepetto finds Pinocchio trapped on his wall NA E9·00:22:19. He tells him "There is no excuse for telling a lie, Pinocchio." NA E9·00:22:50 He says he is going to find the Fairy with Turquoise Hair and explain that Pinocchio has not learned his lesson NA E9·00:23:14. He lists the thrown mallet, the cricket killed and the dogfish as results of Pinocchio's misbehavior, says "All I ever wanted was a son", and whispers "I should never have made you." NA E9·00:24:04 NA E9·00:24:49 Pinocchio sees him weeping and cannot tell why, and Brennan says Ylfa, Rosamund and Mother Goose clearly see deep regret on his face NA E9·00:25:31 NA E9·00:26:10. After he leaves, the Stepmother's voice first speaks to Pinocchio, and she says she could keep his father safe NA E9·00:27:00 NA E9·00:29:02.

In the eighteenth episode Gepetto's voice comes through a door in the Baba Yaga's cottage, telling Pinocchio to tell the truth and be told what to do, and Pinocchio answers that they have to fight NA E18·01:17:51 NA E18·01:18:18. Behind the door Brennan shows Gepetto held by the Stepmother with a broken arm and a bleeding chest wound, joined to Pinocchio by the brightest, strongest string, which Brennan says is his string, made when he made Pinocchio NA E18·01:20:10. When Pinocchio gives up the chance of ever being a real boy, Brennan says Gepetto vanishes, the string weaves a hammock beneath him and he is lifted away from the Stepmother to somewhere in The Lines Between NA E18·01:23:31.

In the finale Brennan says that as Pinocchio says the name Minerva, Turquina surges back out of the pages and moves Gepetto, suspended in golden light, out of the battle toward the Baba Yaga's cottage NA E20·01:30:08. Brennan answers Lou that Gepetto went in a cat's cradle back to the Baba Yaga's hut, and Pinocchio says "Well, I'll see him tomorrow." NA E20·02:12:52 NA E20·02:12:56 NA E20·02:13:01 As Lou tells the epilogue, on Pinocchio's 21st birthday, with the Fairy with Turquoise Hair and his ailing father Gepetto, a whiskey and bubblegum cocktail turns him into a real boy NA E20·02:23:28. Gepetto then smiles and says "no matter what you are made of, you are always my son." NA E20·02:25:32 NA E20·02:25:41
