Burrow's End, episode 1: The Red Warren

Four dozen stoats live in the Red Warren beneath a red oak in the Blue Forest, where Auntie Beatrix puts Tula's children Jaysohn and Lila to bed and tells them the old story that begins "Everything begins with the Blue" 00:12:41. Whispering afterward, Lila says she thinks the Blue killed their dad, Jaysohn admits he is making his monster up, and Lila sneaks out and overhears Big Walmer murmuring about her mother. Half an hour away, Thorn Vale, the Conduit of the nomadic Lukura, tells his wife Viola that he feels they should move, and she walks to the warren to raise it with her sister Tula, whom their mother Ava is grooming while pressing Walmer's interest. The talk of moving becomes a loud family argument once the children burst in, and Thorn, alone, slips into a vision of the Blue, wakes in daylight to a dust storm and orders his Beacons Olliver and Teedles to rally everyone to the Red Warren. At the warren a stoat named Mila finds Ava, who smells a scorched stone on the air, Lila hears a scream, Thorn arrives wheezing through the dust, and Tula decides the family must run, with Jaysohn leading them uphill. Ava sees bodies in the tunnels and refuses Walmer's call to hide before he seals the warren, and from a hill the family watches their home swallowed, Olliver and Teedles catch up, and Viola, up a tree, sees the dust blowing from a gray, river-like path along which something is approaching. 00:00:38–01:44:27

Burrow's End, episode 2: Bearing the Scars

In the woods with no heading, Tula proposes finding a new home as their ancestors did, and Lila, found up a tree with Jaysohn, pours out her frustration that the grown-ups never say what is going on, since "finally the bad thing comes, and it's just the air" 00:13:20. Ava sniffs out Thorn, charges him with the family's fate and cows his Beacons, who go to scout once Thorn apologises to them, and a sheen of blue crosses Viola's fur when she heals herself. A brown bear arrives while the family hides in a tree, a chipmunk drags Ava into its body, and inside the bear Jaysohn dives after Ava, Tula goes for the heart, Viola stabs the eye and sees blue behind it, and Thorn cuts into the spine. Chipmunks living in the bear swarm them, Lila kills the one holding her mother, and Tula spends her Lay on Hands to cure the bear's disease, so that every chipmunk drops dead and the bear lies down, still, while Lila sees her mother's heart glow wrong and Jaysohn bites flesh that turns blue. Viola and Thorn then bite the dimming blue brain and pass out holding hands, and Tula's healing brings them back, all of them fundamentally changed by what happened inside. At dusk, resting beneath the dead bear, Tula tells Lila the grown-ups' biggest secret, that they are scared too and mostly do not know, and Lila tells Ava to shut up. 00:00:39–01:53:17

Burrow's End, episode 3: A Second Sun

Beneath the dead bear, Lila sees that the Blue is everywhere, and Thorn takes her aside to say he started the Lukura because he wanted to study it, after which she tells her half-asleep mother that Uncle Thorn is up to something bad. Thorn slips away disguised as a bush to find Olliver and Teedles, while Viola, after a vision of her litter, wakes Tula to say her own time to have children has come and asks whether the children would mind a cousin named Geoffrey. Tula casts Ceremony as a funeral rite for the bear, Ava speaks of the litter she and Ken lost before she sleeps, and Thorn finds his Beacons at a felled tree with writing carved in its stump and cries with Olliver. In the morning Tula and Lila quarrel over Lila's father, Viola announces the coming litter, and Lila's eyes glow as she reads the carved wood, telling her mother it said "Follow your instinct toward the Light" 01:25:30. From a tree Thorn sees through a wood pigeon's eyes a second, blue sun to the north, and Ava, climbing with him, sees a gray rectangle with a red and white spire. Thorn pitches following the Light, the children agree and Tula gives in, and after three days and three nights the family stands before the biggest, strangest structure any of them has seen. 00:00:39–01:55:57

Burrow's End, episode 4: Last Bast

Thorn marvels that these stoats built their warren above ground, Tula urges caution, and Jaysohn, hungry, bites a rock and then floats off after the scent of meat to a chain-link pen holding hundreds of rabbits. Olliver warns that they would be taken for poachers, so Tula sends Thorn and Viola to talk to the locals, while Jaysohn runs after some fifty stoats with canisters and prods who are herding a huge spiny elk. Thorn vanishes in a bolt of lightning and reappears to flag the herd in a new direction, and Ava joins the hunt and is knocked down. Led by Jaysohn, Tula and Viola find Fenneck and Sybil hurt beside a dead stoat, Viola heals Sybil with Aid, and Sybil, born at Last Bast, tells of thousands of stoats and the Light, while Tula's Insight shows that she is at ease with violence. The hunt's leader, Bennett, meets the family, Tula heals the paw that Ava's handshake hurt, and he kills a rabbit to teach Ava before leading them all through a hole in a concrete wall into Last Bast. Asked what was driven out of this burrow, he answers that it was humans, who "walk on two feet. They're monsters" 01:46:09, then recites the creed of the Last Bastion of the Light, says the place became theirs twenty winters ago, and welcomes them home. 00:00:38–01:50:52

Burrow's End, episode 5: Protect the Light

Bennett leaves to make his reports, and Talia of Population Support tells Tula, Viola and Ava of the five jobs, technology tied to human remains, the First Stoats and a lifespan of around six winters, hands over eight sashes and quizzes them on disease, so that Ava is thrilled to think she might live another fifteen winters. Thorn scouts with Lila and Jaysohn, Lila reads the name Warren Peace Memorial Nuclear Power Plant on the walls and confesses that she once pretended an interest in the Lukura, and Thorn leaves the children in Education, where they meet the teacher Simon and Lukas, who has sinus trouble. Sybil, mourning a stoat whose name has been taken away, as Last Bast does with its dead, tells Tula and Viola "He was my brother" 01:25:28 and leads them and Ava through colored hallways to the Technology lab, where Thorn and the children join them. Sneaking in through the vents, the family hears Sybil play tapes of Dr. Robert Wenabocker, the plant's lead engineer, logging a loss of coolant accident in reactor Charlie. Sybil says the humans are coming back, Tula realises they are in a monster warren and wants to run, and Ava recognises in Sybil's illusion of a truck the thing that took her Ken. The children want to stay, Viola wants to see the technology, and Lila's Insight shows her that her mother has been keeping something from her. 00:00:45–02:29:56

Burrow's End, episode 6: Reactor Charlie

Ava goes looking for Truck and follows striped lines and its smell to a meeting of Bennett, Carter and Pep with the Director Kiran, a huge First Stoat who says the humans are coming back and the stoats will obliterate them, and her Insight shows that Kiran lied about never having met a human. Thorn and Viola talk through their first fight, and Thorn concludes that "my instinct right now is that we stay and fight" 00:46:09. In the food line Tula cures the nose of Lukas, whose mother Meredith works in a lab, while the children let slip lab secrets and Lila says they watched a stoat get killed in Resource Allocation, and back in their cubby the family finds that someone has marked them with musk. Lila goes to Sybil, who calls Population Support population control and Kiran the dictator and gives her a map she has drawn with X's, and Thorn asks Teedles to join Population Support. Following the map to Reactor Charlie, the family is ambushed by a stoat with a cattle prod who hits Viola, and Tula kills him with a smite. They solve a puzzle of stone tiles over a glowing pool, Lila and Jaysohn are drawn toward the pit until Tula pins Lila and Thorn's whip saves Jaysohn, and when Ava slides the last stone the radiation symbol appears and the floor capsizes. 00:00:39–02:23:15

Burrow's End, episode 7: The First Stoats

As the floor tips, Jaysohn lifts Lila, Thorn holds Viola, and Ava sprints down, grapples Tula and throws her to safety before she herself is lost below. The family lands in a chamber around a pool of Blue, and Viola is trying to pull Ava out when four First Stoats enter dragging Sybil: the Director Kiran, the Pope, the Silence and the Speaker. Kiran lifts Sybil and her neck is snapped, and in the fight Kiran brings in a giant glowing wolf, Tula revives Sybil, and Ava comes back out of the pool with glowing Blue eyes. The Silence slows some of the family, and Thorn's 23 damage finishes Kiran, who pulls him close to whisper that they are coming and wish him luck, and dies. Tula spends her Lay on Hands to calm the wolf, Jaysohn tears out the Pope's throat for Sybil and kills the Silence, and Tula deals the Speaker lethal damage, tearing out their throat as they gurgle "She'll be back" 01:32:15. Afterward Jaysohn hears no heartbeat in Ava, Thorn knows that she is not alive, and he understands that whatever is happening to Ava happened long ago to Tula. 00:00:38–01:33:55

Burrow's End, episode 8: Five

Lila's Arcana shows her that both Ava and Tula are revenants, and Tula tells the children how, in the winter they lost their father, she lay down in the deep snow and woke cold until her heart began to beat again. An argument about Geoffrey's death follows, in which Ava says she failed Ken, and the family names the giant wolf MeatWolf. Viola, wearing the Pope's miter, casts Command on Bennett and Sybil, Bennett shakes it off and accuses the family until Tula and Thorn win him over, Jaysohn throws the hat into the pit, and Bennett agrees to share Dr. Wenabocker's tapes. Thorn finds Olliver, now a police officer, who pins him, and in the lab with Bennett, Sybil, Carter, Pep, Malin and Quentin the last tape ends with Wenabocker's cry "There are five weasels" 01:32:58. Bennett names the pit room Phoebe's Heart, Tula repeats the Speaker's dying words, and Carter tells of experiments and of a human who came up the road a year before. Ava proposes following the humans back, Lila suspects the First Stoats were the bad ones, and Tula sends the children to look for clues about the First Stoats. 00:00:39–01:47:12

Burrow's End, episode 9: Human

Thorn and Tula learn from Quentin, who runs Technology, how humans record themselves, and Tula works out that the stoats speak Human, while Viola, visiting Teedles, hears that Walmer is alive and in Last Bast. Ava and the children, with Lukas, find the lair of the First Stoats and read their logs, learning that the Silence was once Hester, that Hester's sister Phoebe, the fifth of them, pushed the others to let the humans' meltdown worsen and tore off Hester's jaw, and that Kiran's notes say that if she comes back they will be ready. Bennett sprints in and leads Thorn and Tula above ground, and Viola, facing a crowd of coppers, puts her sash on Teedles to speak in her place and follows them out to find human camps on the fringes of Last Bast and Bennett in a panic. Scouting the camps, Thorn and Viola find a lone human woman, who falls and cries "What are you, weasels talking? Great, I've died" 01:39:57, and Thorn heals her. She is Dr. Tara Steel, a scientist who says Dr. Wenabocker is in the human camp and has led the effort to return over the last year. Ava accepts her into the community, she promises to keep their secret and leaves them her walkie-talkie on channel six, and one bark from MeatWolf sends her sprinting off. 00:00:38–02:05:58

Burrow's End, episode 10: Evolution and Revolution

Dr. Steel warns on channel six that the humans mean to breach that night, and the family plans for her to lure Dr. Wenabocker out of the main tent over Reactor Charlie while Last Bast's twenty thousand stoats fall into formation and Thorn casts Motivational Speech on everyone. Driving Truck toward four approaching humans, the family drops a hundred feet when the central figure crumbles the road, Lila's Feather Fall saves them while three humans are crushed, and the fourth, Dr. Wenabocker, raises the dead as revenants and opens his suit to reveal Phoebe. Phoebe's command to kill them all seizes Ava and Tula, and Tula badly wounds Jaysohn before she breaks free, while Ava's 109 damage into the ground uncovers a second reactor that begins to melt down, as Phoebe means to send its Blue into the sky and irradiate the world. Viola kicks a falling gun's trigger to shoot a soldier's gas tank, the blast brings the Phoebe monster crashing to the ground and the battle is won, and Tula heals Jaysohn and Lukas, who were caught in it. Thorn's speech to the humans is broadcast, and, as Aabria narrates, "no one can deny that the Stoats of Last Bast are sentient" 01:37:07. In the epilogues Rashawn tells of Viola's litter of three, Kenji, Geoffrey and Rosie, Brennan of Tula telling Geoffrey everything at the meadow where she found him and then going to find Bennett, Erika of Ava's far-extended life and her remaking of Population Support, Izzy of Lila becoming a scientist, whom Aabria makes the first stoat with a doctorate, and Siobhan of Jaysohn joining Resource Allocation and long-jumping, with Jasper's Thorn cheering from the stands. 00:00:46–01:50:46
